What is First and Last when it comes down to renting?
I always thought it was the first months rent and a deposit to move in but what is first and last? I am assuming that it means the same thing as first month's rent and deposit, correct?

if its first and last, it means that you are paying for the first and last month of rent. when you only give first month and a security deposit, you still have to pay the last month. that is the difference. plus you get the deposit back when you move out

first and last is first month and last month rent, and sometimes they will ask for a deposit in addition to that

It is first month's rent and last month's rent. Technically, it is not the same as a deposit, because you are entitled to get your deposit back. They basically just want two months rent up front.

dioncornel
It is first months rent and Last months rent. If they said "first, last, and deposit" then they would ask for a security deposit in addition to the first and last months rent.

First Months Rent & Last Months Rent

Keep in mind they can also charge a deposit however depending on your state there might be limitations as to how much they can hold for Deposits and your last months rent would be considered a deposit.

estielmo
I charge first/last plus damage deposit

Deborah W
Where I live first and last mean first months rent and last months rent...plus a damage deposit.
This is done for the protection of the landlord for those tenants that might decide to skip out owing rent...and most damage deposits arent the same as the rent on the property and the damage deposit is needed most of the time for repairs...

TMan
you should ask the landlord, some really mean that, you pay the first months rent, you pay a deposit in the amount of the rent, and you pay more deposit in the amount of one month. so pretty much the landlord will cover the cost of last month with the deposit if you decide to just up and leave with no warning. hope this helps

Nikki
It's kinda the same. Then they'll have they last months rent if you decide to take off or something. I don't think you get it back like a security deposit though.

you will have to check with the apartment, each place is different. Some places will make you pay your first months rent and the last months rent upon move in. It is hard to come up with at first but it is really nice before you move having a free month!

If it doesnt say First, last and security deposit than yes theyre probably counting the last month's rent as the security deposit.

Jen
Yes that is what it means... I work as a leasing agent for an apartment complex. Basically it is the same thing said different ways!! If your moving good luck :)
