What is the best way to confront my landlord about a maintenance man suspected of stealing from my apartment.?
i was not home at the time and i gave the maintenance man permission to enter without me being there. When i returned home later that night i noticed my psp game system was missing, i always keep it in a safe place, because it cost $250.I looked up and down my apt. three times. Just to be sure i didnt misplace it. The only other person in the apt. was maintenance. Have i any legal stance here, Thanks

well did he have to unlock the door when he came in ? was the door locked when you came home?
Try placing a hidden camera with some valubles in place and have him come back for repairs and see what happens. if he takes any thing then you have a real good case against the man.

Go to the landlord AND the cops, man! If you're sure you don't have it and no roommates, if any, took it. You have to file a report! It wouldn't be hard to track down this guy. Just think, you could help to return a lot of other people's belongings if this guy did it. I would go to the cops first and have them investigate.

The best way is to just be open and honest with the landlord. Go ahead and do this as soon as you can while everything is still fresh in your mind. I would definitely report this to the police dept. if you have not done so already. I am sure they can let you know what actions can be taken, good luck.

Just be firm about it, and explain that you checked your apartment many times.

Contact the police department and the landlord you can tell them both of the last person you had let enter the home without you being there. Yet, don't straight out accuse this person tell them you would like to set a trap for the maintenance man just to find out if it is he that stole from you. Set up a camera and something of value and have him enter your apartment.

If you can get fingerprints off an item that the maintenance guy had no business touching then you might be able to persuade the landlord to fire him. Otherwise all you can do is tell the landlord what happened and hope for the best. You are unlikely to get it back. One piece of circumstantial evidence does not make a case. Police have caught people driving around in stolen cars and not prosecuted them because they said they were buying the car from a private party and they were just out test driving it. Even if you catch the maintenance guy with a PSP game can you prove it is yours? Probably not. He could say he bought it off a stranger and how could you prove otherwise. So you don't have any legal standing to do anything. Only the landlord has power to do something. So be nice to him.

It's hard to point fingers at someone especially with no proof. I would suggest calling the management and mentioning that something's missing from your house and if they'll do something about better security since now you feel a little unsafe. Ask if there is something they can do about installing cameras. Casually slip in the fact that the maintainence guy was there that day and you'd like to know if he noticed it there when he came in, to establish time of theft. (if he says he saw it, it was stolen later. If he says he didn't it was taken before. That kind of thing.) Your management should take the hint.

I would hesitate to directly question or accuse him without specific proof. If he is responsible, your questions should raise red flags for the management so if something happens again in either your apt or someone else's, they'll know what to do about it and perhaps this will even discourage the guy from further thefts, if he did do it. I'm not sure how you can go about getting your stuff back however. Or even get compensation. (If you really want to get your money back, you're perfectly sure it's them, and you're mad enough not to mind lying a little, then maybe suggest the door was left open by the maintainence which means anyone could have walked in and taken it and so the responsibility is their's...?? Bit mean though)
