I'm always amazed at what some homes go for on the TV show "Flip This House". So I'm curious what part of the world do you live in, and what's the cheapest you can buy a house (not a condo)?
In Northern Kentucky you can find a decent home -- 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, might need updating but no major problems in a safe neighborhood for just under $100,000 -- of course there are other homes that can go for upwards of $300,000 and even million dollar homes. The less desirable areas, and more decrepit homes can go for as cheap as $15,000--$25,000. |

I live on cape cod (massachusetts)...a small two bedroom home with 1/4 acre of land would sell for approx.250,000.00.
the taxes are low here...thats another issue purchasing a home and its value. |

I live in Northern New Jersey not far from NYC.
A starter house would cost about 300K if your lucky usually higher ....(2 bedrooms 1.5 bath) Taxes on that house would be about $5500 a yr.
A nice house would probably be in the 400-700K range with taxes obviously increasing. I know people paying 12K a yr just in taxes which is insane!!!
I am moving out of this area very soon hopefully! |

In the San Jose - San Francisco Bay Area, a 3bdr 2 ba home in a good area could easily get $600k. You're right. Nobody can afford to live here if you didn't buy 20 years ago. |

The cheapest decent houses in the Houston area are homes built between 1950 and 1970, with either no garage or a one car garage. I found two listings priced in the 70's in my hometown paper today. The smaller home is only a 2/1 with a carport and workshop, but no garage. It also has a fireplace and improvements such as ceramic tile. It had a lot of remodeling, new central air/heat, and new appliances in the last 3 years, but the roof is within a few years of needing replacement. A realtor's website had their cheapest homes were a handful of 3/2/2 homes in newer communities for $89,900. There is at least one neighborhood around here that sells new homes from the 120's. |

Define "decent". There's a property about a mile from my office that would be quite acceptable housing to many people the world over. In urban southern California, the asking price is $260,000, and the value is in the land less demolition and haul away (it's a 9500 sq ft lot, when most are around 6500 and newer lots are smaller yet) |

Seattle Suburb starter houses are over 200K, decent houses 275K, houses I would buy 400K. Farther away a used mobile home on 5 acres 200K. |

I am in Northwest Indiana, right outside of Chicago. You can buy a new 3 br ranch for about $175,000. You can get a decent home in a decent neighborhood for around $125,000. Move across the border to IL and you add about $25,000 to each of those prices. In the city, double that and you get a condo and not a house.
I love flip this house and property ladder also. Kirsten tells 'em like it is on property ladder. I love when they don't listen to her and lose tons of money. |
