It's simply a case of estate agents using an "Americanism" to make a flat sound better than it ever WILL be ! - |

The term 'flat' is used in the UK, except for the more expensive properties where Estate Agents want to make it sound grander, in which case they may use the term 'apartment'.
'Flat' in the States refers to punctured tyres. |

"Flat" is a word used by people in the UK. "Apartment" is used elsewhere, including in the US. There's no difference in the actual dwelling. LoL. |

Nothing. Apartment just sounds classier (and therefore more expensive!) |
|

It was always Flats in the UK and apartment was an Americanism which has crossed over the Atlantic. It is now used more, as Flats now conjure up multistory blocks of grey structures without any character. |

An apartment is a flat with pretensions. |

Flat and apartment are the same thing. In the USA most folk call a flat an apartment. However, here's one American lady singing "Diamond's are a Girl's Best Friend" who definately uses the word 'flat' when she means apartment of course.

You know what? No matter how many diamonds you wear at once, you just never look trash - how's that?
Speaking of the USA and UK, Sir Winston S Churchill once said, "We are two great nations separated by a common language".

We Brits, who watch endless hours of American soaps and movies, understand a lot of Americanisms and slang. However, the same does not happen in reverse. Americans require English to be spoken in a version which they will understand. Hence we have Hugh Laurie [a Brit] making it on American TV apparently speaking perfect American.

Flat = Apartment in the UK |

It's essentially the same thing! Usually we call it a flat in England, while in America it is called an apartment.
However, apartment is a nicer description - which is why English estate agents usually calls flats apartments in their descriptions! Flat brings to mind images of squalor or a grubby, pokey property - apartment sounds more spacious and desirable!
