The ONE safest place? Do you want to rent IN Charleston or just somewhere around there? If IN the city, any place south of Broad Street would be beautiful, though probably pricey depending where you're moving from. You could go as far north as the old Citadel, though, and be just fine (there was a time when that was not true).

Further out, see what apartments there are on James Island - it's convenient to Charleston but quiet when you want it to be. Or if you want to live at the beach, go to Sullivan's Island (don't go to Folly Beach).
