Ask about the terms of the lease- what they charge month to month versus a 6/9/12 month lease. Ask how much the security deposit is (and if you have pets, ask if they allow them and what the deposit is for that.)

You'll want to find out if they pay for your garbage/water/sewage/gas. Some places will pay for these services, some won't. Depending on how much the utilities are, this could be a sizable monthly expense.

Find out if they're having any rental specials (example: first month free, no deposit, etc.) Find out if they charge an application fee, some places charge one, some don't.

Find out what would be the earliest you could move in, and how many vacant units they have that are the size you're looking for.

Find out what is close by as far as groceries/malls/parks, etc.

Good luck with finding your new home!!

of course make sure you can look, but if it is for you and someone else make sure you ask if that's okay, ask where you will be parking. If utilities are included, if you are going to be responsible for snow and leaf removal of your area. Make sure you get a written contract also.

What utilities are included. Whether there's laundry on site. What deposit is required. How long the lease is for. If pets are allowed (if they allow dogs, you have to think about maybe a neighbor's dog barking and bothering you). If there's a manager on site (for problems). What the neighbors are like (Of course they can always lie about bad tenants, but you can maybe read between the lines). If there's been any problems in the past with loud music, smoke drifting from other units, whatever else might be of a concern to you from living with neighbors.
Square footage. Upper or lower unit. Any problems with break-ins or crimes. Security building (this may not matter where you live). Does the building have recycling.
Oh, and Parking space or street parking (very important where I live, maybe not where you are).

what the security deposit?
does it have central heating and air?
pet? if you have one
square footage? ( compare other places you call )
rent stable or does it increase each year?
water and trash included?
has it been tested for lead paint?

Suzy
Ask about the provisions of the lease/rental agreement. Ask about mold, rent, security deposits, pets, parking. Are utilities included. Are you allowed to hang pictures, paint walls, does it have carpet. Ask to see the apartment in the evening when other tenants are home (check for noise, smokers in the building, cooking odors, roaches, animals, etc).

Your pic suggests an attractive woman (I know I'm deluded again, I still think females exist somewhere). Ask if the property manager are attentive, sincere, respectable, or some typical sloven indolent bit-h that doesn't care about drug-trafficking, violence, wild parties at all hours, property defacement, harassment nuisance of neighbors, theft, identity-theft and more as common.

Otherwise, make sure all appliances are relatively new, in good working order, that apartment are in top shape at time lease are signed (they can promise the moon, then swear they never had any such intent later and often get away with it), that maintenance are timely and professional, even that maintenance men are not permitted in your bedroom while you are sleeping, or in your restroom while you are bathing (we have some idiots out there and some property managers are such slobs they don't care).

Ask that whatever property rules are in fact enforced, what fees if any should your rent ever be paid later (after due date, typically from 1st-5th of month, unless due on anniversary date of each month [rare anymore]), that security are provided, that some effort to maintain property value without excess rent increase are embraced.

Ask for a 6-month initial lease with an option to extent to a one-to-five year lease if it looks like good property. That way they can not raise your rent during that one-five year lease, if such provision are made in the lease contract in writing (printed on the lease agreement).

NOTE: A really good apartment landlord/management company does not automatically raise rent upon every lease renewal. They seek to retain loyal, good residents that respect the property. Those who routinely raise rates usu. have far less regard for their residents.

when i call them, which by the way i have been for the past three weeks lol i just ask things that are important to me... like, i want one with a washer and dryer hookup, so the first thing i ask is that, if they dont have it, i say thanks, and thats it for that one. lol i just ask the important questions first, and then i go on to ask, abou the neighbors, if there are any problems around there with disputes and stuff, which by theway they have to tell you by law.

but if you were wantign to know what to ask, here is what i usually ask:

*how many bedrooms/ baths?
*upstairs/ downstairs?
*what if any utillities are paid?
*rent?
*deposit?
*lease?
*washer and dryer hookup?
*dishwasher?
*pets?
*have there been any problems in the neighborhood with the police in the past few months?
*is there somone on site that can fix something if its in the middle of the night or something?
*then i ask for directions,
*and when i can come and look at the place

those are the q i ask .lol good luck on finding your spot!

You should ask about prior renters, and past repairs.
