What should I do about my neighbor???
My downstairs neighbor (I live in very close apartments) just had her brother, his wife, and their three kids move in. On top of that, my neighbor also has her own 2 kids and her husband. It's a little two bedroom apartment and their kids are loud and dirty- they throw garbage everywhere outside. I know they are not supposed to be down there living with them.
Should I tell my landlord about them being down there????

YES!!! As a renter you have that right! It is against the law to have that many people in one home. You follow the rules so should they

Talk to your neighbor. this might be a temporary thing(emergency)... What ever reason, explain to her that the children are too noisy, they are throwing garbage everywhere, and you don't appreciate it. Tell her it is your obligation to inform your landlord of the situation in two weeks if it is not taken care of...Give her the two weeks to find another place for brother to move to. If they don't move out then call your landlord...Good Luck.

if it is bothering you you should if they are just there and not bothering you I wouldn't but first I would check out their situation are they there because they want to or because they have NO WHERE else to stay don't just do it cause you can do it if it is TRULY bothering you

Good luck ")

Call Child Protective Services and the Health Department. Both of those agencies will resolve this problem for you.

Of course. Does the landlord pay for any of the utilities? What does your lease say about how many guests you can have and how long can they stay?

I would assume the extra people are there because of some emergency. There may have been some trauma, like a house fire, or tornado, and the brother's family may be trying to get resettled. If the kids are loud and dirty, it's obvious the adults are not coping well at this time.

People who are crowded are cranky and touchy. The children act out the confusion of the adults, and are scared because things are not normal. They are more scared because they sense their parents are scared, too.

I would go down to the neighbor's, and ask if I could babysit the kids for an afternoon, or keep some of them overnight sometimes.

And if you see the children outside playing, go out and watch them, and smile and encourage them to play hard, and run off some steam. If you smile, and watch, the children will soon begin showing off for you, and yelling "watch me!", and throrughly enjoying the attention of an adult.

Having an adult's attention will give the children something to look forward to, and relieve the adults' stress a little, because the children are calmer, and less demanding of attention, and less likely to need to act out.

You should not allow the situation to continue, but I would rather try to lend a hand to alleviate the situation - maybe you have contacts to help in job search, or know the system well enough to know where to go and what questions to ask to get the brother's family into their own living quarters - than to complain to the landlord.

no. you need to go down there and politely explain whats going on. then if it continues go tell your landlord. perhaps the relatives are in transition from one place to another and need a place to stay for a couple weeks? im just giving them the benefit of the doubt.
but really, you should tell them they need to get better living conditions and you will report if trash keeps appearing outside.

Is your problem with the kids, or with the number of people living there? If it's just the noisy messy kids that upset you, have a talk with the parents first. If they can get the kids to behave better, then maybe you could let it slide for awhile.

Be sure to mention that the mess is sure to attract rats and cockroaches. You live close enough to them to have to suffer with their pests too.

Complaint to the property owner, every day, until something is done. Also, call Child welfare and complain to them too.

Yes because if you know there doing something wrong you should tell. If you landlord dosen't care then call a higer an athorite. But first confrount them that there littering and being loud. Then if they still refuse you tell you'r landlord. Be respectful about it too.

BR
Your choice is to remain silent and protect those doing wrong, or speak up and help protect the property of the people who are providinig you a place to live.

It seems like an easy choice to me.
