Depending on how many people live in your home..
Add up what your rent & utilities (gas, electric, water, sky or cable) and then divide it by the number of people living in your home - and that amount is what she should pay -
As for the phone - charge her for the phone calls she makes unless you are on a plan that all your calls are at a specific rate then divide that as well -
When I moved back in with my parents - I paid 150 monthly - that included paying my part of the house payment utilities and phone I also contributed towards the Food shopping adding an additional 50 a month I was making about £12k a year - my mum put aside some of the money to help me save for a place of my own - and also she helped me to budget everything - like petrol for my car and going out money (not that I went out much)but taking into account I was also living in a house my parents were paying a mortgage on - I paid more than the avg person.
Sit down with her and work out a budget with her
I know someone who lives with their parents she pays 1/3 of the rent weekly - she is responsible for 1 bill and £5 every week towards gas and electric and 1/3 of the water bill - she pays for her phone calls and is solely responsible for the Sky bill -
Another friend of mine hands his pay to his mum - and she gives him an allowance so to speak and the rest goes towards bills, food and into a savings account for him - his allowance will pay for his petrol to get back and forth to work or other travel monies for public transport - he also has a little of that money to go out and "play" with his friends - at the end of each week his mum sits down with him and shows him how everything is worked out in detail - and it has helped him budget well - any money he has left over from his "allowance" he puts towards his savings -
Every parent is different when helping a child out - the best thing to do is sit down with your daughter and work everything out in budget form so she can see how it is worked out - and it will also teach her how to budget and make the best use of her money.
example below -
Rent/mortgage 50.00 (devided amount)
Water £5.00
Gas £5.00
Elec. £5.00
Sky £21.00 ( or the divided amount)
Petrol/Travel money- £25-50)
Shopping (food and amenities) £25-50
Total bills/shopping - £136.00 - £186.00 (a month)
Then she can decide what she can put into savings and what money she can spend to go out with or extra money she might need for other things - if she has a car she will have to pay for the MOT and of course the tax disc so she has to budget for that as well - |

She should contribute what she feels she can afford - if only to give her a taste of what it's like in the 'real' world, when she moves out and gets her own place. You could always secretly save some of her contribution in a savings account and give it to her to help her out when she does leave the nest. |

make it less than she would have to pay if she is on her own but enough to help her understand the value of money.....i'd say about £30-£35 per week |

Consider what she uses... Would you really charge your daughter RENT (odds are, she's lived with you for a while right?) There's not really an expense on the roof... Take into consideration money for groceries, heating, water usage, electricity... stuff like that. Divide the expense by the number of people with a paycheck, and hand her the bill ;) |

when i started working mum charged me £20 a week rent, that was food and a roof over my head, tho when my partner started working his dad charged him £250 a month, i dont see any reason why you shouldnt charge her rent, she will have to when she gets a place of her own, its a good starting point to pay at home, and am sure you being her mother would let the odd miss payments slide, you have to set the boundaries on the rent payments, she pays you rent fine, if she cant one month then fine, but that month she cant pay you, she cant borrow either...if you see what i mean...good luck working it all out |

It would be fair to ask for 1/3 of what your running costs are. You can go a bit lenient by allowing her free food but 1/3 for electric, gas, phone, council tax, petrol and any other 'essential' services she should pay for.
Good luck...ours hasn't given us a penny yet in fact....we are going backwards and always have the "can I borrow until pay day" request....... |

Take a sample of charges advertised in your local paper for renting a room and work out an average. Ask her to donate this much and ask that she contributes to the running costs of the household by undertaking e.g. cleaning duties (the whole house), undertaking to do the laundry etc. Be reasonable though, you want to ease her into independent living not punish her for working. |

When my children started work I let them keep the first weeks pay as I think that is very special and after that I took one third of their take home pay. They had to save one third and that left them with a third to spend,it gave them a good grounding for respecting the value of money.Parents that do'nt take a sensible amount to cover all their childrens expenses do'nt in my opinion do them any favours in the long run. |

Entirely up to you of course, but you may want to consider not charging her so she can put some money aside in order to be able to find a place of her own earlier. I'm sure she would appreciate this gesture and it would help her get a good start in her finacial independance. |

how about £125.00 a month, but put £50.00 in a saving fund so when she needs a little extra you have already saved it for her. |

I never charged my daughter rent - but I could afford not to. Then she moved out into a flat for a short time and had to pay rent and running costs. 9 months later she moved back home and so I started to take a nominal £35 per week off her. However, I never spent a penny of it but put it into a savings account instead. Occasionally she would give me more because she knew it was being saved, and now she's in the process of buying her first home with her fiance, so that money is coming in handy. I used it as a savings scheme for her - for which she is now most grateful. |
