PlNk pEaRlS | What to do about noisey neighbors? |
I live on the top floor of a two story apartment. We're in lease until December. The people in the apartment below us are college students and they have parties aaaaaalllll the time--like every night. And I'm pretty sure they have orgies, too (seriously) because I have to park in front of their living room window and they always leave their blinds open and there will be like 5 or 6 people in the living room with just their underwear on and playing like, "bow chica wow wow" music....
Anyway, my husband and I have both gone downstairs several times and politely asked them to be a little quieter. I'm not an idiot. I understand that hearing other peoples' noise is a downside to renting an apartment, but they are waaay too loud. I never hear the other neighbors and the people below us said they don't ever hear us (annoyingly enough, not even when we're banging on the floor).
Told the landlord. She printed out a neighborhood flyer "being considerate to neighbors". It did no good. What now? Additional Details And they're really sweet people by the way. They're usually pretty apologetic if we tell them they're being loud. One of the girls always makes small talk if we pass outside or something. I don't want them to hate us. But I can't take staying up till after 1 am every night not being able to sleep because they want to have a drunken time. |

Bow chica wow wow chica wow wow! lol
If they are really being ridiculous, you should have the right to terminate the lease. In our apt, you have a right to peace and if the landlord wont evict them for violation of noise ordinance, thats grounds for lease termination. If that isnt an option, you can call the cops. I know that's not always a great solution, but a $250+ ticket for disturbing the peace should teach them.
Hope that helped.... |

Have you tried ear plugs? Those soft foam orange ones work pretty well. Other than that, I don't think there's anything you can do. I have the same problem. I have tried calling the cops, but they just come and ask them to turn the music down, the same as I could do myself. It doesn't make any real difference. |

You have to keep complaining to the landlord and start calling the police.
You can get their phone number and just call them. |

Call the cops on them. Seriously, if they were as "sweet" as you say they'd be a little more considerate.
I've had similar issues in places I've lived. Calling the landlord won't do much because legally they can't evict them unless they have a written record of police responding. Generally 3 or 4 instances of the cops coming are needed to legally proceed with the eviction process (depending on where you live). Also, after a few complaints the cops may issue a citation for them to pay a fine or appear in court.
Just start calling the cops. |

Oh, that's annoying!! I used to live in a college town and, my god, it sucked. The next time one of the girls stops you to chit-chat on the street tell her politely about the noise, but don't hold back, tell her everything, you have to work the next morning, you're up until 5 am, ect. Then tell her the whole neighborhood is talking about her wild orgies. If that does nothing call the police next time. They are in violation of the noise ordinance. Go to the city and get the facts. A slap on the wrist will do no good in this case. |

Why do you want to make small talk with people who are so inconsiderate? I would have immediately called the police because these noisy party people are breaking the law and
it's called disturbing the peace. I don't know what state you live in but I'm sure it applies everywhere. The landlord should be informed and I'll tell ya if I was the landlord I would have started an eviction process with the first complaint of noise.
I manage an apt. building and we had problems with noise.
I was informed that the police were called to a particular apt. more than once. They were evicted. End of problem. I did an addendum to the landlord's leases for all his properties elaborating on noise concerns. The addendum became part of the lease and every statement on it is strictly enforced. We
now have a clean and quiet building. My tenants respect each other. Doing a notice isn't enough. It has to be an attachment to their lease and it has to be enforced.
