What to do if you have a bad reference from a landlord?
Like it says in the title, should i be honest and tell them what happened or just give the next landlord a friends number to call?

Honesty is the best policy. Don't screw up again.

Didn't think landlords could give a bad references? I thought the choice was good or none!

If a landlord wont give a reference then its a bad sign!

I would be honest but make sure that he or she knows you wont be making a mistake like that again.

kinkyshambles
if you provide them with a bad one you won't get the house it's as simple as that. so bend the rules.

You don't say where you live, or what the "bad reference" is. This could be important information.
If the "bad reference" is about something relatively "minor" (like you didn't clean up on move-out, or some "late pays"), or the landlord is either being picky or vindictive, you may be able to plead your case on an application form for a new place.
Most lease applications will have wording that lying on the application can be cause for immediate removal (eviction) and forfeit of security deposit.
Even with a bad reference, you may find you are able to get a new place. You may be required to pay more deposit, or non-refundable deposit for cleaning, or some other amount of money (like final 2 month's rent), but you can have your new home.
Be careful. I think honesty is the best policy

NEVER LIE! If they find out, you will be evicted.

you have to live up to your mistakes and deal with the consequences.

dont say anything to the new landlord

You don't have to give his name as a reference. You can use your employer or someone else instead

Yeah just be honest, but i mean they don't care they just want your money so don't do what ever it was that got you a bad reference.

♥Amelias♥ ♥Mummy♥
give a friends number instead, if you tell the truth there is no way you will get a place. I have lied on every application and have pretended to be a landlord for my friends so that they can get rentals, it worked everytime, thank god i don't rent anymore though it sux lol
