First off, pay off all your credit cards and all your outstanding debts. Then, I would max out my ROTH IRA for last year and this year. Then, with the money I have left, I'd invest wisely based on how risk adverse you are. If you are a gambler, you could always play the stock market or Vegas. If you are going to play the safe route, put it in a CD or a high interest bank account. Do not pay off your house. There is no point. If the market keeps tumbling and you paid off your house, you just lost a crapload of money in equity. You want to keep your money as liquid as possible in case of an emergency or if there's a nice opportunity that comes up. Good luck! |

I would pay off the smallish mortgage on my condo then give it to my son (he's the one living there), and give my other son the same amount of money so he can buy a place to live, and whatever is left, add to my investments.
Or maybe I'd just keep it all after taking a nice vacation. |

There are two answers:
If I am bad with money I would put down on any debt I have on my principal residence, not to be mistaken with an investment property for rent etc.
If I am smart with money I ride the 40 year year interest rate low environment and service my debt at record low levels. I then invest the full amount into the stock market via my IRA or otherwise in a diversified global portfolio of funds. Massive tax deduction, massive growth. If somewhere down the road interest rates creep up take it out and pay the mortgage down. |
