Building since the mechanics such as sewer, electric, water lines and so on can cost from 40k to over 100k depending on location. Even if you buy land with a wreck of house, bulldoze that and then build new it is cheaper then raw land 20k salary is not enough to own a home. |

Where I live, it costs about $150/sqft to build a decent place + the cost of land. A new house might cost, especially if it was in foreclosure, under $125/sqft.
If you are making $20k a year, the most mortgage you will qualify for is about $60k, assuming you've held a stable job for 2 years and have decent credit. |
