When I got my first home, my realtor who was also a friend bought me two fruit trees for my yard (Pear and Apple). That was 8 years ago and I still enjoy those trees. It's definitely a gift that keeps on giving (shade and fruit).

Bed Bath and Beyond or Lowes gift card.
When you buy a home, there is always ALOT that you need, either home products, or fixing.
Both are quite good.

I always like to send a few loaves of bread from Zingerman's--it's expensive, but good, and bread is a traditional gift for a new homeowner. . . as in, "Bread, so you will never know hunger." http://www.zingermans.com

I also agree that a gift card to a place such as Bed Bath and Beyond, The Container Store, Target, etc. would be good.

A platter from a place like TJ MAXX or Crate and Barrel, along with some homemade brownies (on the platter) would probably be appreciated.

I always go the gardening/yard work route because people usually have household items (unless they are moving from mom and dads), but few who haven't owned a home before have gardening/yard work items. And, most new homeowners are excited about having a yard to work in and are anxious to get to plant something. And, everybody needs a garden hose, whether to water bushes or wash the car - something few apartment dwellers have.

Depends on how much you want to spend, though. A Lowe's or Home Depot gift card is a safe route. But, I've seen really cute "baskets" put together using a wheel barrow or a wrapped up garden hoses. A 5-gallon bucket filled with gardening supplies. All kinds of things. Google "gardening gift baskets" and you can probably get some ideas.

stuck w/? you sound bitter...you don't have to get her a gift. I think gift cards to Home Depot or something similar always come in handy when you own a home.

My standard for brand new home owners is a tool kit in a plastic carrying case from Home Depot, it has a hammer, picture nails , pliers, tape measure , screwdriver, and a lot of other things that a person will need- even if they have some, no one has all, and the case makes it really nice. It also is fairly inexpensive and has never failed to please!

When we moved into our home last year, the best present we got was a "HELP!!" basket. What it was: a painters mix pail filled with stuff that you wouldent think of needing, but do need in your house...plunger, flashlight, those long lighters, lightbulbs, picture hanging kit, measuring tape, extension cords, scotch tape/duct/electrical tape, notepad for the fridge, and a box of garbage bags. It came in handy, and I will always remember that present!!

It depends on what she bought and what she has.

If she bought a fixer-upper, a GC to a home improvement store would be nice. If the house is weak in the landscaping department, take her tree or shrub shopping. Or just buy a nice tree or shrub.

I love the idea of the photo in front of her new house with friends, that is very thoughtful.

If she already has a bunch of knick=knacks, don't get candles, vases and trinkety things, they end up in tag sales and at the goodwill.

I know some people like to buy small appliances, but we have a blender someone bought us that we have used maybe 3 times in the 6 years we've had it. I could certainly live without it.

How about just helping her move in? Show up on moving day with a pizza and some beverages, and just lend a hand. That would be a great present.
