When buying a home, should you tip your real estate agent?
I know the agent gets paid based off of the price of the home; however, what is a good way to show my appreciation for his work after closing?

Expert Realtor
Absolutely not...as an agent, I would never accept additional money from a client.

The commissions that we get are fairly consistent with the amount of work that we do. If anything, the agent should probably be getting you a small houseworming gift after the closing as a thank you for business in hopes for a referral.

A referral...is the BEST thank you a client could ever possibly give me...even if it's years later.

You should send your agent a check for $10,000 in appreciation. LOL.....Seriously, the BEST tip you can give to a good agent is referral and recommendation to others you know who may be in need of real estate services. As an agent, I NEVER expect tips. (I do get them now and then, and they embarrass me. I usually donate them to a charity)

Your agent will be very pleased if you send a nice letter of thanks and appreciation, which he can place in his folder to show to other prospective clients.

You don't need to they are paid well. If anything refer your friends and family to them ask for a few business cards.

LEC
Shake his hand, tell him thank you and ask for some of his business cards to pass around when someone asks for a good Realtor.

Have you seen how much money these people can make???? It's their job! It's not like they wait tables at some crappy joint.

Lisa
Not really. Although I have seen gift baskets and gift cards given to the agents. And the other way around. Some of them will even give YOU gift cards and such.

BTW they don't always make good money. Only the great ones do who have been in the business for many years. And they have to be the higher end homes like greater than $500K. I know some of the agents at my office are lucky to even get a check for the month. Even when they do and they sell a $200K home they may only get like $1000. And only maybe once a month? That doesn't sound great to me. SOme of them even have to get other jobs in order to make enough money and get benefits and such. And they have all sorts of things to pay for including monthly fees even if they don't sell or list anything. It really depends on the amount of the home.
