michy203 | When do you pay the deposit on an apartment? |
I am looking to rent an apartment for the first time. I am looking to rent with roomates. I am using craigslist as my primary search tool. I am curious as to when exactly do you pay the deposit and first months rent on an apartment? Do you pay the deposit as soon as you say you want the place, or do you pay it as soon as the landlord says your credit check is okay, or do you pay it the day you move in?
Also, does it look bad if you ask the landlord if you can pay the deposit in..well, deposits? I am a student and I can afford the apartment just fine, but I dont have enough for the deposit + the rent.. I need to move by jan.1 but I dont have any money saved since I was kicked out of my house last month! What are my options? |

I take it your in the USA? coz here we can get a place if we have no credit history..
You pay the deposit BEFORE he hands you the keys. But if you change your mind about the apart, you do know you'll loose the deposit right?
It looks kind of bad paying deposits in deposits and that you ahve no mone ysaved up :S what if one month you come up short for rent :O? you'll need savings to back you out. |

Well, usually you pay the deposit and rent when you sign the lease. If you're renting from a company, it is doubtful that they will take installments. If it is from a private owner, they'll be more likely to work with you. Good luck with your new place! |

You pay the first month`s rent and the deposit at the same time, this usually being when you sign the lease. It`s doubtful if the landlord accepts the deposit in installments, but I guess it doesn`t hurt in asking although that will make him/her wonder if you are going to be dependable in meeting your monthly rent. |

As soon as you decide you want the apartment they will ask for the security deposit to hold it. You won't need to pay first month's rent until you are ready to move in.
Now here's a little advise you didn't ask for: Make sure you take pictures that are dated of every single nook and cranny of the apartment. Make sure you write down absolutely everything that is wrong with the apartment on the move in check list. Apartment complexes and rental brokers make a great deal of money off of deposits. They will keep your deposit even if you leave the apartment in immaculate shape. So cover your bases now. Keep a copy of the move-in checklist. Don't get screwed. |

can't move in until you pay the deposit. If they tell you your credit was approved, they are going to ask for the deposit, and if there are no specials- they will ask for first and last month rent. some apartments even have discounts for students upon presenting your student ID.
There are so many places with specials so be sure to look around. If you are looking on craigslist, find someone who already is in the apartment, and is only looking for the rent. If they ask for some sort of deposit, they are going to be more understanding about maybe making some sort of payments- just be sure to explain your situation.
Good luck. |

You do not pay anything except application fee until your credit check goes thru and you are approved.
If you are not moving in right away, then they will ask for a deposit to hold. You then pay the rest of the deposit and 1st mo rent at move in.
If you are moving in right away then you pay the deposit and first months rent right away.
Some landlords will take the deposit in payments, but most will not. It would be better if you have a friend or family member that can pay the full amount for you and make payments back to them. |

when they call you and say that you are approved :) Then you give the deposit a few days before moving in :) |

if u r approved...you pay the deposit to hold the place for u. and you mean make payments to pay off the deposit...it looks bad if u r dealing with a company but not if u r renting from a private owner. just don't go on and on about it...just ask briefly may I make payments of $___amt. |
