When house shopping do you look in the fridge?
We are selling our house and I wonder how clean I should keep our refrigerator. It's decent, but should it be spotless?

What I look in is the oven. If it's clean, then they pretty much take care of the property. But don't let your eyes tell you everything. There are very important things that you can not see. Have a whole house inspection when you make your offer on a property. You can make you offer contingent upon the results of the inspection, so that if anything major comes up you can renegotiate the contract, or walk away.

i would only care if the fridge was being sold to me with the home. i might want to look behind the fridge though to see if there were any signs of mold or water damage, though. if the latter was not the case though, a bad fridge would not be a deal breaker for me. after all, a new one could be purchased for a couple hundred dollars. small potatoes when you're talking about a home purchase.

If the refrigerator is going with the house, I might look in it to see what compartments it has...etc. If it's extremely dirty or nasty, it wouldn't make me not buy the house, but I might ask for a comparable replacement (meaning used would be acceptable).

Its very rare one sells their house with the refrigerator that goes out the door with you.
The stove stays and 50 percent of the time so does the washer and dryer but the real estate guy is with them and opening a refrigerator is not something people do unless they are really snoopy.

acermill
Of course it should be orderly and clean. It's considered an example of how well you maintained the remainder of the premises. If you have a dirty and sloppy refrigerator, buyers will think that you handled OTHER parts of your property similarly.

Yes, when shopping for a home I look in the refrigerator, stove, cabinets, closets, etc. Sooo, that will tell you that your house has to be spotless from top to bottom. I would not go into dresser drawers, or anything that personal, but I want to see exactly what I might be purchasing.

Marysue
Yes, it should be clean! People will look everywhere from your fridge to your cabinets to your closets. Any lack of cleanliness or order can give the impressions that you don't take good care of your home and/or that your home lacks storage.

It's only an issue if the refrigerator is part of the deal. Usually, it isn't.

We're in the process of buying our first house now. Of all the properties I looked at, I looked in the refrigerator. If you want top-dollar for your home, get it as clean as you can. If the buyers think they're going to have to do a lot of clean-up in addition to repainting & all, they're going to try to talk you down. On the other hand, they're just going to clean everything before they move their stuff in anyway. I'd say it doesn't have to look like you could perform surgery on it, but it should be pretty clean (no dirty marks on the handles, all food out, etc.)

Unfortunately, the house we're buying doesn't have a fridge, so we're trying to talk them down $2,000.

Expert Realtor
Yes, they will look in the fridge, b/c they may want it as part of the negotiation.

It's honestly none of their business to look in the fridge.
Don't worry about it.
I'd just put a sign in there for them like:
"Well, well.
Someone's quite nosey, aren't they?"

haha.

You're overthinking this. The cleanliness of your refrigerator isn't going to make or break the deal to sell the house. Just keep it regularly clean and don't worry about it.
