When renting an apartment. what are the major cost?
other than the rent, food, utilities. what other thing would i have to spend money on to live on my own?

collegenebula
Internet, cable... if you are into those sort of things...
other than that... uhh... personal care products?
There isn't much other than what you listed.
Yeah laundry and transportation as stated above.
But if you are driving a car now, and can get around public transportation it will probably level out... and some apartments have laundry services on the premises.

It is really the nickel and diming at that point where you can nitpick where all the money goes. I lived pretty comfortably in my 650 a month apartment... paid about 70 for utilities and 50 for cable and internet... I had a roommate... and just ate when I ate, bought new usable products as necessary...

Wasn't that bad honestly.

Well to get an apartment you need first and last month's rent plus security deposit that is huge right there.
Then you will have to put a deposit down to get your electricity turned on and possibly cable if you got computer/television.
If you have all that you have to furnish the place.
It's a huge layout of money in a couple of months.

I live in an apartment and here are the costs:
Security deposit and first month rent and pet deposit.
You will need deposits on electric, land line phone, or Gas and water. Sometimes cable hook-up costs to install.
Re-occuring monthly bills:
Cable/Internet-This is a big expense believe it or not
Electric
Gas
Water
Trash removal
P.O. Box
Car Pmt.
Insurance on car and renters ins.
Vehicle fuel
Phone
Food is always more than you think
Cleaning supplies, laundry
Things you don't think of like light bulbs, batteries and mops
Some apartments don't have ceiling lights and you will need lamps.
Not sure what else you are thinking of...Some apartment places include water and trash and mail. Some apartments have blinds, others require you to provide proper window coverings. It is difficult with no details to help :(

insurance, furniture, cleaning products, laundry expenses, that is all I can think about. When you consider utilities, figure in an amount for a deposit, if you have to prior history, or a bad payment history.

Optional expenses, cable, internet connection.

That's pretty much it besides money for cleaning supplies and tp... if you're looking only into the cost of living. You might want to consider your other bills too like cell phone, car note, insurance, etc. And def budget for spending money. You may not plan on going out every weekend, but it'll come in handy.

Also depends on whether you have furniture cuz you may need to purchase some, along with dishes, textiles, etc.

duck
Gas, water, and laundry.

Well..u just pay rent..and u can give an advance smetimes certain apatrments have special offers..like if u give a downpayment u wont to pay rent for two months..etcc..basically ur paying in advance..but u only pay rent n if electricity isnt included than that too..or gas..water..depends on the apt..n u have a lease which is a contract for how long u can stay usually 2 yrs if renew it than 2 more yrs..so yea..u pay ur own cable..n thats it...nothing else to pay for..

armymom1968
Depends- will the landlord be mowing the yard &/or taking care of the snow? Will you have a washer/dryer? Is there one on site?

I think otherwise you've covered the basics, but just make sure you go over the contract real well. Take pictures before you move in, because some landlords seem really nice till you move in, then when it's time for you to move out they try to stick you with things they never fixed before you moved in.

Depending on what you own when you move in, you may want renters insurance as well- i never did, just a thought.

That's pretty much it. In some apartments the cable is included as part of the deal. The only utilities you will get a bill for is power. Phone bill is yours to pay of course. It's really not all that bad.
