Sparklepop | When renting in the UK....? |
Can you leave whenever you want, or do you need to stay for a period of time, i.e. 12 months?
My boyfriend and I are considering renting because we need to relocate but do not have a property lined up. We are only hoping to rent for a few months - not a whole year.
I haven't been able to find an answer to this question anywhere else, so if anybody on here in the UK rents, I'm hoping you can help me out here!
Thanks :-)
xx Emmie |

Lets are usually for a minimum period of 12 months, but hunt around and you should be able to find one that you can have for an unrestricted term. You will of course be required to give notice though.
You should speak to Letting Agents in the area you're wanting to rent and they'll be able to tell you how it is. |

If you're not from the UK you should be able to arrange a tenancy of shorter than 6 months (a holiday let) but 6 months is the legal minimum length of tenancy for a UK resident. It can take 6 months to move into that property you really want so I'd consider taking a 6-month tenancy in any case. |

Usually a short term lease will be 6 months, you usually have to give 2 months notice before the end of the 6 months if you want to stay or leave. Hope this helps x |

Hi Emmie,
You could try putting an ad in the paper (accommodation wanted). You might find a private landlord that is more flexible than an agency. This method worked very well for me in the past when I and my cats needed lodgings. I didn't think anyone would respond to someone looking for accommodation with cats but I actually got three offers to choose from and the one I picked worked out very well. Of course it was a slightly different situation from yours as I was just looking for a room but it is worth a try. Also mention it to as many people as possible, maybe a friend of a friend of a relative can offer you something...
best wishes

In the UK,most rentals are taken on a 6 month shorthold tenancy agreement. This means that you are responsible for 6 months rent.If you do not wish to extend your 6 months then you have to give notice 1 month before the end of your tenancy, the landlord must give you 2 months notice if they do not want to keep you as a tenant. If both parties are in agreement, the tenancy rolls on month by month until one or the other of you wants to end the tenancy. Hope this helps. There are some estate agents(realtors) that can arrange shorter lets with empty houses that are on the market for sale,so you could check that out when you got here.Owners of holiday homes will have properties to rent out for a short term but they are usually expensive as are caravans(trailers) on caravan parks. All these are options, you just need to bring enough money to support yourselves until you get work(you will need a work permit) if you are a non eu citizen. |

if you hunt around you should be able to find short-term lettings of 6 months or so. when you take out a rent contract you usually have a clause in the contract that says you may leave the property if you inform them within a notice period for example 2 months before you plan to leave. renting can vary between company and individual. your best bet would be to line up a few places you have seen for a viewing and then ask all the question you need answering and then only settle for the place with the most suitable rent agreemnet for you. remember you are not under any obligation to do anything until you sign on the dotted line. hope this has helped you. |

Try sites like above. Most lets are 6 months / to a year, but in places like Oxford where we get visitors all year, you will find shorter times.
If you sign an agreement for 6 months plus, you are committed to pay the rent for that time - you will be asked to pay a damage deposit and utilities deposit up front as well as a month in advance. Sometimes if you can find someone who will take over the agreement, the agents will let you, but the people would be checked out and costs incurred for the extra paperwork. |

It's usually a minimum of 6 months, with an option to renew if you are a good tenant. |

99% of rentals are called a "Short hold tenancy" the first 6 months will be compulsary then it will be month by month,,ie either party can give just one calendar months notice,,,unless of course if the landlord states otherwise,ie for 8 months only for example.... |
