Jonesy | When would you start packing? |
We close on our house in 21 days and I am wondering if we should start packing now. "We" is my husband, my son, my baby daughter and myself. We haven't gotten any boxes or begun sorting through things yet so we would really be starting at square 1. Is now a good time to pack or are we too far out?
(Also we need to be out of our apartment 4 days after we close and I should add that my husband's job is gonna take him on the road 4 days between now and closing.) |

Start packing NOW! At least two boxes a day, start with out of season clothing, then seldom used kitchen items-good china, glassware, etc., books, kids toys, linens, photo albums, DVD's and CD's. Be sure to mark boxes as to items and room to be placed in.
Pack suitcases for yourselves and the children, include night clothes, clothing for first day in new home and bed linens for each bed in suitcase. Don't forget toiletries and towels. The packing of the first night and first day suitcase was a spur of the moment move the last time I moved and it was the best thing I did in the whole move.
I wish you health and happiness in your new home. Congratulations! |

I have been packing a 1 bedroom apartment for a family of 4, by myself for about a month now. And I leave on the 10th and am still not finished. So I would start now. U-haul buys back any boxes you don't use if you buy from them. |

Start packing the things you don't need on a day to day basis. |

You should have started a couple weeks ago. Start going thru all the closets and drawers. Get rid of as much as you can. Have a yard sale. |

I would start packing the non-essentials now. |

Start packing. When I move between rentals it takes me two weeks of solid packing, cleaning, moving, then cleaning anything that needs to be cleaned after everything has been moved out. You probably have a garden, too, no doubt as well as two small children AND you may have to pack and move all by yourself.
I'd make a list in order to effectively work through moving. Do you have anywhere to put the packed boxes or will they have to sit around for a couple of weeks?
If you have a house already:
1. Make a moving list, (but in sections and have your son (if he can) assist with small jobs):
a. house.
b. son.
c. daughter.
d. you and hubby.
e. methodically pack rooms.
f. garden.
g. shed.
h. cleaning.
i. moving.
j. general look over.
k. rubbish removal.
It pays to be organised and moving can be very stressful! Buy or collect boxes from: neighbours, businesses, other. Have a lot of tape to tape up the boxes and newspaper to wrap frangibles. Also, use stickers or a marker to list what is in the box and into which room it should be put once it's moved to your new premises.
Good luck!

P.S. If a company moves the furniture and boxes for you, list how many boxes (and number them) you are sending with them because boxes can be lost accidentally and you may need to know what has gone missing. |

Yes, start packing now. However, don't close the boxes in case you need to get something out. I usually label boxes with the name of the room in which I will unpack them in the new place. Also, I always label one box Unpack Me First. I put stuff I'll need to get through the first night or two (like one set of utensils, one plate, one glass; critical bathroom stuff; cleaning stuff (altho be careful not to mix toxic stuff with eating stuff)). Also, start a spiral notebook to write down to-do lists, phone numbers, etc. One with a pocket is ideal, as you will usually have various receipts and documents to deal with. |
