knowyourself | When you are looking for a home to buy, do you prefer to view it empty or furnished? |
Additional Details I would much rather see it empty, as you have all said so far, so you can see better what is there. I think buying extra stuff to stage it is silly-- as in that hgtv show Designed to Sell. Just get the junk out so we can see the house, imho.

I like to see both sometimes but I prefer furnished. The house my wife and I bought was shown to us unfurnished but the photos on line made all the difference. There were awkward angles in some of the rooms that we though would be hard to work around but we saw it was possible in the pics. Plus the pictures were taken before some renovations and before the previous owners had slathered on gobs of nasty dark shades of green YUCK!!
When we go to sell this house we will be getting a storage unit to store the majority of our stuff to make the house seem more open and spacious. But we will still leave all the beds, dressers, couches, and tables to show how the rooms feel and look once decorated. I think it helps cause when you get down to it all beds tables and couches are pretty muck the same just different shapes and sizes.
However one house we looked at had a queen sized bed CRAMMED into the master bed room that made it seem like a closet! so i guess it could also hurt but my preference remains Furnished! |

Empty is much better; I agree :-) It gives me a better idea of the space I have to work with :-) |

I prefer to see it empty, but realtor's will oft times have it "staged" if it is vacant. Sometimes furniture will give it some perspective, however. |

Furnished homes sell quicker, and they also give the buyers an idea of whether the furniture they already own will fit. |

Empty, so I can see what I have to work with. I can visualize my stuff in there instead of some fancy 'stand-in's' that will probably not have a similiar feel to the place that my stuff would. |

I tend to get swayed by other people's decor. If it's nice, i'll like an otherwise unworkable place more, if their stuff is ugly however I might be overlooking a very nice house.
That being said, I would prefer to see the house completely empty. This way, you can see the house for what it is- bad carpet that was hidden by a rug, pet stains, etc..etc..
Oh, and if it smells, you know that will be the smell you are buying. |

I actually would like to see furniture. It's easier to get a feel for the true size of the room when you actually see stuff in it. |

Statistics show that furnished homes sell faster than vacant. But I agree with the other poster, if the decor is tacky, it turns buyers off. I recently showed a house with big dark furniture, obnoxious animal prints and really strange decor choices. Were my clients interested? No. And what they remember about the house were all the weird things, not the great layout, huge kitchen, formal and informal dining, new appliances, etc., etc..
I prefer to show a house empty. A clean empty house allows the buyers to envision what they can do with the space. |

I prefer empty. It would be easy to hide flaws in the floors and walls with furniture. |

Empty - it's hard for me to visualize our stuff in there especially if they have a completely different style then ours - like country with the plaid couch and pink chair or something. (We're more contemporary/modern.) I can also measure the rooms if needed to see if a certain piece of furniture will fit in an area. BTW, I hate oak cabinets. |
