upards | When you purchase from a market place seller on Amazon, how do you make your choice? |
If you are purchasing from Amazon's Marketplace, how do you choose the merchant you ultimately buy from? Do you pay attention to price only? or does the seller's feedback play a part in your choice? do you pay attention to the comments written by the sellers? |

As long as their feedback is reasonably high, I see little reason not to trust them. I then go off of a combination of shipping and price (I'm willing to pay a dollar or two more if it's from a nearby seller as opposed to somebody all the way across the country). If they've received, say, one negative review out of a hundred, I don't really take it into account. |

I try to go with the the best feedback, but yet also will buy from the cheapest best seller. Example: there are two or three sellers who have 100% feedback, if one of them has the item for less price, I will buy from that one. Also the condition of the item plays a part in my selection. A seller can have 100% feedback, and the item is used and one small mark, if another seller has 99% feedback but the item is brand new, unopened in original package, I will buy from that seller. I recently got a CD that could only be purchased through a market place seller. There were like six or seven of them that had 100% rating, I then looked at price and condition of the CD they had and made my choice from that. I got one that had never been opened, and was even cheaper than one that had been opened, but still "new". There were some that had never been opened, but the seller had like a 95% or less rating and the price was cheapest of all, but I did not buy from that seller, due to the rating. I have purchased about a dozen items over the past years from market place sellers and using the above way to make my selection of who to buy from: I have never been disappointed by the seller or the item when I received it. |

I look at seller feedback, and I READ the negative reviews. Was the buyer unhappy because the seller didn't deliver in a timely manner? Did the buyer's repeated attempts to communicate with the seller fail? Was the item poorly packaged, and thus arrived damaged? And yes, I pay attention to the comments made by the sellers in response to negative reviews; did they bother to respond at all? If not, bad sign. But if they responded to the negative reviews with comments like 'I explained to the buyer that we were out of that color at the time,' things like that, then that gives me more trust in the seller.
Price is part of it, but I'll pay more for an item if the seller sounds trustworthy based on seller feedback.
...and I buy a LOT of stuff from Amazon.com. TONS of stuff. Because when you live out in the sticks like I do, you don't WANT to drive 45 minutes to a shopping mall to pick out stuff--easier to order from Amazon.com. |

Amazon's A-to-Z guarantee applies to their marketplace, as well, but requires a few more steps. The risk you take is less than shopping through eBay, for example.
When I want to buy through the marketplace, I definitely check the vendor's rating, but I also take into account the number of votes that went into that rating. For instance, I would rather pay a a little more for a vendor who has a 98% approval rating with 1200 votes, over a 100% approval rating with 4 votes.
Just as with eBay, the comments are worth reading. If there are problems, you get a sense of what those problems will be with that vendor: poor packaging, untimely delivery, not received at all.
You can also check whether the vendor has an independent site of their own, if there is a number to call for problems, those sorts of things.
I would have to say that I pay most attention to the approval rating/number of votes, then the comments, and price comes 3rd. I'll pay a dollar or two more for ease of mind! |

Other factors being equal, I purchase from the seller nearest to me. In fact, I will pay a bit more to buy from someone also in Middle America like myself. I have not determined if delivery is really faster, but I do like a quick response. Comments that emphasize promptness get my attention. Once I buy from a particular seller, I watch for that person again on subsequent purchases.
As an aside, of the hundreds of books I have purchased from Amazon Marketplace, only one mistake has ever been made. |

I definitely look at the seller’s rating. I will pay more to go with a seller with a better rating. If the rating is less than high 90’s but the price is much better than everyone else’s, I’ll look at the actual ratings sorted worst first to see why they were rated badly. You can get a feel for whether the seller is arrogant, a handful of people had a rare bad experience, or the rater just had unreasonable expectations. Many times the bad ratings are about the product, not the seller.
I also look for vendors with many ratings. Unfortunately, this means I may pass by perfectly wonderful but new vendors. I just don’t want to be the guinea pig.
I also look for the state they ship from. I choose one that’s close but not in my state so that I can avoid the sales tax. I also hope that means the item will arrive a little sooner. I also check return policy. I will not deal with a vendor with a hard-nosed return policy.
When I buy used items, like books or DVDs, I check to see if the vendor has posted their criteria for Like New, Very Good, Used, etc. Amazon does define them, but I have found sometimes the vendors define them differently. I make sure that I will be satisfied with the vendor’s categorization of the item.
The only bad experience I had with a vendor is with an out-of-print cookbook that I bought used. The vendor rated it "like new" but it arrived with erased pencil marks. It was a gift so this was not cool. But since it was for my daughter, it worked out OK. I did mention this in my rating of the vendor. |
