Katie | Where are the best places to own a house in America? and best place for the job economy in america? |
My husband and I really want to move somewhere warm, we are looking to buy a house under 150,00 where will that money go the farthest? Are there these places near cities that have a strong diverse job market? My husband has a bachelors degree in psychology and Linguistics (not that means much these days) and mostly business to business sales experience we are in our mid 20's . I am going to open an in home daycare once we by a house, so for me I can go anywhere. But for him he is still trying to figure out exactly what he is going to do, so we need a market that is not slaging (like it is here in upstate NY) And has a large selection of possibilities ..any suggestions? |

I am going to suggest looking into the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina. This includes, Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem. The 12 counties that make up the area have a population of at least 1.5 million people yet is mostly country and rural. The climate is generally mild and gets very high marks from northern transplants.
Housing can easily be found for under $200,000 with a 3-4Br home, 2 car garage and a little land. Taxes are surprisingly low. There are several excellant colleges and universities in the tri-cities with a younger, ambitious population. The job market is diverse with many positions in health care, human services, technology and new jobs in aviation technology (Hondajet, FedEx) and biopharmaceuticals. Of course, this is the world center for the furniture industry.
We are located 80 miles west of Raleigh and 80 miles NE of Charlotte and both are connected to the area with modern interstates and high speed rail lines.
The area is family oriented with a growing younger presence and many churches of most any denomination.
Shopping is unsurpassed and greensboro has the largest arena and convention center between Washington DC and Atlanta with many entertainment and sporting ventures comint to town. Recreation from little league to two popular minor league teams with new ballparks to large lakes for fishing and boating. The world famous NC Zoo is nearby.
The area has not been subject to the wild housing speculation of other areas and there is a good supply of good homes in a buyers market. |

Close to the major metros (Dallas/Ft Worth/ Houston/Austin+ in Texas seems to have the best outlook for jobs, growth, and I think you could find some house options in the price range?
** Too warm for me though - I live in Alaska! hehe |

Houston, Austin, or San Antonio, Texas. All warm and $150K buys a real decent house. All have decent economies. Day care is always needed. San Antonio is drier and the heat is more bearable in summer. Austin is very hip and loved by younger people-their official motto is "Keep Austin weird."
Schools may not be as good as where you are moving from, however, and insurance is high in hurricane areas. We pay $500 a year in Chicago, we paid $4000 a year in Houston. (Both houses worth around $400K). |

For that kind of money, the beswt option is to stay as close to the center of the country as possible. Austin Tx. has affordable housing, and is currently booming. San Antonio is similar, but nowhere as nice a city. New orleans is a little riskier, but it is growing amazingly fast, and housing deals are to found everywhere. |

Not in Florida -- just an FYI -- the AVERAGE home costs $300,000 and most people are laid off and people are NOT moving here like they used to so you can cut us out of it. |

there are all kinds of stories on the net and in magazines about the best places to buy right now and where the jobs are as well. Places like Austin Texas, and other medium sized towns. Just google it or yahoo search for the best places to work or buy. |

There are details missing in your question; "upstate NY" is a huge area and the economy varies considerably; it is strong in Syracuse e.g. but weaker in Buffalo.
However a favorite place these days is Seattle or its environs, it is relatively warm and is thriving economicallly |
