Carol M | Where can a person find free boxes when they are preparing to move? Most stores won't give them to you now |

Sam's club.
They typically have a whole bin of 'em near the front.
However, I moved recently, and I must say that buying boxes will make your life a whole lot easier. If you have a lot of stuff, stacking a bunch of differently-sized boxes is hard, and many of the boxes you get at Sam's club won't have tops.
Instead of the moving stores, see if there is a box wholesaler in your city that can sell you bundles of 25. This will be a lot cheaper than U-haul or your storage places.

Search for "free boxes" on craigslist. If you work at an office, you may be able to take boxes from rheems of paper or other sources. Also, some movers can lend you sturdy plastic boxes or wardrobe boxes. |

I have to thank you for posing this question, because I was wondering myself. Now , thanks to the others answers, I have an idea for future reference when I have to move 900 + miles when my mom passes away ( from terminal cancer). I now know where I can find boxes for all my stuff ! ( besides relying on others in this building to leave em by the dumpster in the garbage room). I was gonna mention the places they did. I also want to tell you though, if you DO get some from a Liqour store, as soon as you empty the contents in your new place, GET RID OF THEM. you don't want cockroaches, do you? they sometimes lay their eggs on the sticky part that once kept the box shut. Good luck! |

Free boxes are hard to find these days, but if you are working with a REALTORĀ®, ask them if they know of anyone who has just moved into a new home and is throwing away their used boxes.
Some REALTORSĀ® will even buy them for you if you use them for buying and/or selling a home. It doesn't hurt to ask. |

I have had luck by posting to an area "freecycle" group. Many people post that they are trying to get rid of boxes (many trach pick up services will not take all of them), or if not yu can post that you need some. Go to freecycle.org and find a group in our area. Good luck on your move! |

I have had good luck recently at Dollar Stores. Sometimes they are already flattened, but you should be able to tape them back up again and reuse them. Other places like office superstores, discount supercenters, etc. I think quit doing it because they started selling new boxes instead.
Dollar Store finds can be great because you may even find some with built-in compartments that work for cups & glasses & breakable knick-knacks.
Always ask first, but they are usually located in dumpster to the side or behind the store.
Some grocery stores will also let you have produce boxes. |

Yeah, a lot of stores now recycle their cardboard boxes for cash.
When I move I prefer to ask for boxes at liquor stores. These boxes are designed for heavy loads (bottles full of liquid). The trick is to ask them what the best time is to pick them up.
My sweetheart once scored, not only boxes, but 97 cases of Lemon Beer, free, on one run. (College town, and aparently nobody in the town liked it. The beer had a 'use by' date, and the store had no option but to toss it. Lucky us, eh?). |

you also need a membership to go to sam's club...if you live near a dunkin donuts, i'd try them. i used to work there and we gave them away all the time because we just threw them out back in a cardboard dumpster |
