We currently live in San Francisco, CA. We were recently married. My husband lived in CO for 12 years and me in SF for 12 years. We would like to be able to afford a house. We are used to living in a progressive area with live music, places to buy organic foods, coffee houses etc. We love to camp, hike and be by water or have it nearby. We would like to live in a smaller community that has a village like feel (low crime) with the benefits of a larger community nearby for cultural events, a night out etc. We are in our late 30's. My husband is in tech sales and I am in social services. It would also be great if we did not have a long commute for work. Where would that place be in North Carolina? Any ideas? Thanks for your help. |

I would say the research triangle area (Raliegh-Durham-Chapel Hill). That is the fastest growing area and really pregressive. Other than that, Charlotte is really nice. If you want small and progressive, you might try the Chapel Hill area. |

Well you're obviously not going to find anything in the south quite as progressive as San Fransisco, but you can get somewhat close in a few cities.
First, I'd say try looking at Chapel Hill/Carrboro. These twin towns are university-oriented, very progressive, and a very charming community. They remind many people of Berkley....Southern-style!
Second, try looking at Asheville, in the western NC mountains. Western NC is actually quite right-wing, but Asheville is an oasis in the middle of it. Almost like a mini-SF surrounded by mountains.
Thirdly, consider Durham. It's NC's most ethnically-diverse city. It's unique in that it was once a very blue-collar industrial town, but has transformed into a modern city based on medical and technology economies. (This is home to the famous Research Triangle Park.) It's also known to have the best fine dining in the state.
Fourth, Raleigh would be a good consideration. But only look into the heart of Raleigh...inside the circle that the I-440 Beltline forms (downtown areas). The sprawling outer parts will likely not be anything you'd care for, but the city center is growing and becoming a nightlife/dining/arts center for the region. |

Im not sure if all NC sucks but steer clear of Wilmington and surrounding area. That place is so backwards. I felt like I was in the twilight zone. They also have hardly any jobs and the jobs they do have pay very little. I live Raleigh area is good. |

Charlotte is the place for you...you can live near the city or away from the city and have all the amenities you need....Lived her for 16 years and love it..you can have the best of both worlds...mountains, beach and cultural events....great area....housing market is also great here...no bubble here....I am a Real Estate Broker in Charlotte and most of my clients are relocating to this area for the same reasons you stated... I think you can find negative in any town, including Charlotte as the previous people stated...but Charlotte is growing in its culture, industry and economic development...which fingers out to the smaller towns surrounding...which is also ares that many of my clients choose, with a comute to downtown...How is the market in San Fran? |

I'm a Realtor in NC and read just this week that Raleigh and Charlotte were both voted areas with the least overpriced housing markets in Forbes Magazine. Charlotte was #1 and Raleigh was #3. Both areas have many options available as far as culture and entertainment. They also have many "bedroom communities" nearby. Let me be the first to welcome you. |

Garner NC, Holly Springs, NC, Fuquay-Varina, NC, Angier, NC, Clayton, NC are all small towns with a great sense of community and not to far from each other. Problem is that all the jobs are basically 45 minute drive to Research Triangle Area, unless you get something downtown Raleigh which if you lived in Garner or Clayton is only like a 20 to 25 minute drive. Chapel Hill is a very expensive area. Where most of the wealth is concentrated. Cary is a nice conservative town also. Home of SAS Institute. |

We just visited North Carolina and I was impressed! There is a small area called Indain Trail which is about 35 minutes outside of Charlotte, it is beautiful, quaint, and a great place to raise children. It seems that there is something for everybody nearby and it gives you the opportunity to commute into the city as well. Hope this helps! |

Try rock hill sc.Its just south of Charlotte and lots cheaper.The lady in front of me is wrong about Wilmington it is a area.Remember this is still the south and full of great people we are just country.Other than Charlotte your neighbors still speak to you. One lady said Indian Trail that is a good area close to Charlotte also. |

We live in Sc but traveled to NC a few times. I'm not sure about where to live but I can tell you to steer clear of Charlotte, NC. It's not a good place to live, High Crime rates and all. Good luck with the move! There are several nice looking towns in NC though. |

Some where near but not directly in Charlotte i would say , try looking on the North Caroline official website and look up the crime rates, school, businesses , home prices , and things like that , or try joing a forum or site with people who live in NC and see what they have to say about it xx |
