Where should we move?
My girlfriend and I are looking to move again next year. I need a city with at least an indie film community so that I can continue to work locally. NYC scares my girlfriend and LA is too far for her. I'm starting to think Austin might be a good choice. I like big cities, development, and art/music scenes. We're both in our early 20s so being near a university/college would be nice. It's essential that this city is affordable, safe, and has lots of options for nightlife.

Background: I grew up in Miami; spent a year in Gainesville, FL; then moved back to Miami for another year. She's from Tampa. Now we're stuck in Savannah because of some ill-advice.

Where should we go? Are there any other cities where I can get film work or should I start trying to convince her that the flight back home from LA isn't so bad?

Bonus: A place with some good indie radio stations, and some independent theaters. Also, I have no interest in Boston.

Boulder, CO and Park City, UT come to mind.

If you like the heat Phoenix
If you like the snow Chicago
If you like the rain Seattle or Portland
If you like the coast San Francisco

Good luck!

Minneapolis! We have it all and more. It's an awesome city for young people, great jobs, great activities, parks, lakes, entertainment of all kinds. Awesome change in seasons, and games to go with each one.

You won't be disappointed. Give it serious thought. I'll help, just email me. I'd be glad to send you info or whatever to show you how great this state is.

Just email me.

I was going to say Miami, but since you already lived there, I would say either California or New York

You should have a job lined up first somewhere before you even think of moving. I'd put in applications in cities where you wouldn't mind living and go from there. Go where you get offered the best job.

Looks like you should be moving to another country. Toronto is going mad with film productions. Most of the commercials you see on TV are filmed here, not to mention tons of movies. It's the new LA lately. The Hulk for starters?

Not to mention a much better place to live than any American city. Yes I said it, the 5 largest Canadian cities are all rated better places to live than every single American city. Come on up!

austin, tx is a great town with relatively low rents and steeped with culture and good restaurants and night life. also oodles and oodles of excellent sport facilities. gainesville and savannah are fine places too of course but you may bet a few storms during hurricane season.

Austin is a good choice. It's a growing college town that is really a cheaper alternative to LA or NYC, and while they are dying, Austin is just getting started.
