Giggles | Which is a better deal?!? |
I'm moving and I'm so short on money...
I'm going to be the only one living here, so I don't care if I have to live in a studio! lol.
Tell me which you think would be a better deal...
Just answer option A or option B, give opinions if you'd like.
Option A:
One bedroom, one bathroom.
Unfirnished, but there will be a stove and refridgerator.
$400 a month, they pay for sewage, trash and water.
I'd have to pay for anything extra I wanted.
-Or-
Option B:
One bedroom, one bathroom.
Unfirnished, but there will be a stove and fridge.
$450 a month, but they pay for water, sewage, trash, and electricity.
Anything else I wanted, I'd have to pay for.
So basically, the first one doesn't pay for electricity like the second one does, but the first one is $50 cheaper a month.
I really just want opinions, but anything else would be acceptable too. :)
Thanks for helping me out on this life changing event. |

Wow! Where I live, rent for a one bedroom one bath is more like $800-$850!
Anyway, you will most likely find that your electricity will cost more than $50 each month. You have to consider heating and cooling, cooking, dishwasher, laundry, computer, T.V...everything that uses electric.
So, if you live in Arizona like I do, you may want to take option B with the paid electric. I have a 1bed 1bath and spent $80 last month on electric, and that's with me only running the air for about 3 days out of the month.
HINT: Find out which electric company you would be dealing with and call them. Ask what the average for that square footage costs per month. This is a common thing, and they get these calls all the time.
If the apartment is in a complex, call the office and ask them if they know what the average is, or even ask a potential neighbor if you see one (walking to their car, etc...I wouldn't recommend knocking on doors).
No matter what you decide, make sure you budget well and get a place you can afford.
Good Luck and Best Wishes!
P.S. Please make sure it's a SAFE place to live. In AZ you can look at the local police website and they tell you how much crime in the area and what kind. There are some places notorious for car theft and domestic disputes. BE SAFE! |

Electricity is going up. The government is allowing electric companies to raise their rates by 50%. Mine has already been put in effect. I'm paying at least $150.00 more than I paid several years ago.
A) Doesn't pay electricity, so you're going to have to foot the bill. I don't know where you live, so it's hard to give you a solid opinion on that. Your rent may stay the same, but the electricity bill will eat up a lot of your monthly cash.
B) Pays for electric, but you have to take into account the same problem as above. If the electric goes up, so will your rent. How much is up to the landlord in regards to how much 'out of pocket cash' he/she has to pay.
In my opinion, I would take the $450.00. Check with the people in the area and see if they're paying the 50% rise in the electric bill. That way you can get yourself a 'guesstimate' on what you'll be paying. Talk to the landlord as well.
Good Luck! |

You left out two big factors - well, big here in the northeast U.S.:
1] what kind of heat does each apartment have?
2] Who pays for the heat?
All things being equal, I would rent apartment B - with the electricity included.
I rent a 1BR/1Bath apartment. My heat, cold water and hot water are included in the rent. My rent is almost $200 more per month than your option/apartment B.
BTW, my electric is between $35 to $55 per month.
I LOVE it here! Why? #1: I'm not getting phone calls at every hour of the day and night from every other tenant living in this tiny complex [over 20 units].
2] My heat is included in the rent I pay.
3] My neighbors do all the complaining to the landlord AND THEIR rent goes up.
Thanks for bringing your Q to my attention. I enjoyed answering it!

Definately B because you get more stuff and electricity is really high this days. |

if everything else is equal like location, condition, etc. I would do B sine the electric is included and this could be a large bill, especially with $100/b oil prices. |

I would say that the difference between the two is so small, it's not even something to worry about.
The more important things: how noisy is the apartment community, what's the proximity to school / work / shopping / recreation, how far away is your parking space (important when you have groceries), what's the clientele like (you may want to be around people your own age, for instance)....
You're going to be there for 12+ hours a day. Make sure it's someplace you can live comfortably. The financial difference between these two apartments is insignificant. |

since its only you opition b is the best even if its $50 more. You have to factor in a few things is gas anywhere in the apt. If you have a gas stove or gas heat or a gas water heater youll have to pay for this as well.
But if you have NO gas I would honestly go with b electic during the winter in a closed area meaning your not heating the outside can be any where from 30 - 300 a month. Due to electric going up.
Also as odd as it might sound sometimes you have to pay for parking so make sure you factor this in as well
Renters insurance helps alot if you have a flood tornado fire or if anything gets stolen costs you per month unless the landlord has some sort of renters insurance already on it. Trust me sounds stupid but comes in handy.
My neighbors are very thankful they got more insurance because 2 weeks later a big fire happened and they lost everything.
Phone, internet, tv are all luxurayes. meaning you can live without them plus its one less bill to pay
If you have a car factor in payments if its not owned also insurance plus gas into your car.
If you own a car but you are working very close to your house i would just walk since 1 it saves you on gas and 2 better for the enviroment
plus if this is your first time moving away you need the following
1 some place to wash your clothes
2 you need towels atleast 4 of each 4 bath 4 hand and 4 wash cloths
3 you need towels for the kitchen if you wash them by hand
4 dishwasher or dish soap
5 soap for your self
6 dishes this includes silver ware pots and pans cups bowls plates
7 food because one cannot live off fast food well you can it just isnt very healthy
8 a bed
9 place to put your clothes
10 stuff to sit on in your living room
11 a tv if you want fyi luxuary
12 radio just to know the weather comes in very handy
13 a tash can with bags
14 health products as well
good luck to you and best wishes to you. |

Who is paying for heat? If you will be getting a bill for heating with electicity, it could eat up that $50 savings. Can you talk to a few other residents of each place to find out what their other costs are (other than phone, TV-cable)? You may also want to consider things like parking costs or how close each place is to public transportation and grocery stores. |

Your electric alone will probably be $50 per month. |
