KittyE | Whilst renting from a private landlord should I have access to all cupboards? |
There's a walk in cupboard in my bedroom that is locked. I asked the landlord for a key but she refused as she said it is used for storage of her stuff. If I'm paying rent for the house shouldn't I have access to the cupboard? |
|

Look in your lease. If it says something in there about not being able to access the capboards, then no. Otherwise, yes, you should be allowed access. |
|

Tuggamamma
|
YES that or she needs to remove the cupboard |

Ask Shelter, if you have one in your locality. Or go to your local Citizens Advice Bureau. They give free advice that you can trust. |

depends on what your lease says |

of course you should ,phone C.A.B.or contact your local council, if your landlord has not put it in your contract she should'nt be doing it. she should be giving you 24 hours notice before she even enters the property.kind regards ralph |

Yes you should, unless it says differently in a lease or something. Tell her to cough it up. |

if you are renting the whole house and have doen it legally then she would not have access to the house anyway. tell her to move her stuff out and put it in storage. |

Yes you should, unless it say`s otherwise in the contract...... |
|

well, i think you should have access, but my reason is that
if the police search your place, they are going to consider it YOUR stuff.
At a minimum, she should have told you that you would not have access to that cupboard when she showed you the place and the rental price was discussed. |

If you prior had an agreement that she storage some of her stuff in the locked closet, then it's fine, if that wasn't agreed beforehand: SURPRISE!! How much I hate it when people trick you into renting you a property and then occupying some of the space you pay for! There is nothing you can do, if you complain, your landlord will tell you to find another property. |

Weird. Did she mention that this particular space would be unavailable to you prior to you renting the house? If she did, then there is no dilemma here. You knew about it and still signed the contract. If she did NOT, then you need to find out WTF, and why are you paying rent for her storage space? You should have use of the entire house. |

Bet thats where she keeps her hidden camera and secret recording equipment! |

Actually, most states have laws stipulating the difference between renting part of a residence as an apartment, and the renting of an entire house. In the case of renting a house, no portion of it may be locked to prevent usage by the tenant, nor is the owner entitled to any protection for his personal property stored there.
Check with the laws in YOUR state, but I suspect your landlord is in the wrong, EVEN had you both agreed to it in a lease. |
|

yummymummy

yes you should unless its mentioned in the contract.
we once had a locked atic which was extremely annoying as were convinced we could hear movements up there! |

Depends what your contract says, my tenants did not have the use of the loft - except for alowing access to tradesmen if any repairs became necessary, I didn't want anyone putting their feet or heavy belongings through my ceiling - it was a wise move given the damage they did in the house! |

No the landlord has a right to not include any portion of a property, so long as it is either established as an initial condition of the rental, or the change of terms of the rental agreement is done with proper notice. This is very common in seasonally rented vacation homes. Other examples of analogous situations would be that garages and/or cellars not being included as part of the rental |

no, there are boundries when renting in a privet house, she should have covered them before you moved in, my husband and i had a friend that moved in our finished basement, we gave him the lower bathroom the two bedrooms and 1/2 of the kitchen so he would have some kitchen space for his own food, it got fun because in the fridge we would get our cold stuff mixed up and we would have to start marking things like the milk and eggs ect. |

Yes unless its states different on your terms and conditions .which you should have signed. |
