Katie | Who can I report unsafe apartment conditions to? |
I have lived in my apartment complex for 4 years now, and they've never been nice by any means, but they're completely livable; no bugs or anything. We have these wooden awnings which hang off the second floor; they have been collecting ice and snow all season. Last week it got really windy and all the wood one's fell. They we're large and very heavy, if they would have hit someone they would have killed them. We had nothing damaged, but it obviously wasn't safe.
These apartments are very old, and now I'm concerned about other possible safety hazards. Is there a building commisioner or someone I could call to get some investigators out here? Who would I call?
My other concern is these apartments are kind of doing us a favor; they let us live here with our bad credit and with no co-signer, so I don't really want to get on any body's bad side.
And before anyone says it, moving is not an option. I live in Flagstaff, AZ and these apartments are $100s less than all others. Additional Details These were solid wood awnings with 1/2 a foot of solid ice on them. We called when we noticed they had fallen, and they're responce was a non-chalant "oh, another one?". What exactly do we report to the office aside from a general feeling of unease? They fell because of rotten wood. |

first take all the picture that you can about any unsafe condition. make sure that it is time and date stamped because it matters. then call the dept of buildings in your state. they have a division which checks on these things. last be careful that the landlord does not try to throw you out in some fashion form or manner. good luck!! |

You are asking for trouble. If something specific comes up, notify your landlord in writing and keep a copy.
I don't think you realize that if you owned your own home you would be dealing with unusual problems like snow on awnings all the time.
I don't know how often it snows there, but in NY we stay out from under the eaves in the winter. |

Contact the landlord and give them a chance to solve the situation before you contact anyone else. |

have you tried having maintnance fix it? I work as a leasing consultant for an apartment community (im also in Arizona but in Mesa). Im not sure who you call to report that. Typicly you would prob need to report it to management and if they dont do anything about it THEN take it further. Read the landlord tenate act and that may tell you what steps to take.
It would be really hard for them not to find out who reported it to them though.
Oh or try calling the fire department or the city |

Do NOT call the police. The city or county building dept. is the right place. |

You shot down all what came to my mind....except trying to fix it yourself....maybe get together with other people in those appt's , your friends, otherwise I can only suggest the authorities....then they might close the whole complex .....
Good Luck........ |

Find your local police departments non-emergency telephone number. Contact them and they should be able to tell you the correct people in which to contact. |

Well i haven't been in my apt that long, about three months. The apt. got broken into last night. They came in through the window that i asked the management to fix a month prier!!! Both my bedroom windows are plexi-glass...smh Okay so i call the police, & took the report, then talk with the security officer. Asked him to call the right folks to come fix the window that night. The break in happened 10:30p.m....he replied, after talking with them that they said put a plastic bag on my window... Went to the office the next morning to show report, & to speak on the matter with management. She was not available, just the front desk help. I was told that i would have to wait until Monday to speak with management. How can they not be on call for situations like this.. Someone came out after the fact to replace the fake glass, with ply wood! Wow like they can't pulled that off.. I just want my money, & to be able to move out.. What are my options? |
