Yes as an investment, but the buy-to-let market is difficult now, so many people thought it was easy money, and in some places the market is flooded.
I would buy a 3/4 bed house in a northern uni town, and let to students. Lowest outlay for maximum profit.

Yes as Samantha says, holiday home.
And income from rental
And long term investment
And to modernize and sell on for profit
That should just about cover it?

Second home purchase for future plans.
When we purchased our second house, home prices were at a low. We had the cash for a 50% down payment. We used it for weekends and vacations. By the time we retired the house was paid in full and we settled right in.

Investment or vacation. Both are valid uses, depending on your desires and financial situation.

What the others have said, except for Albert.

My question is, as long as you could afford it, who wouldn't?

Albert arrrrrrrrggh
Either as a holiday home, to rent out or as an "investment". I personally would not as it is pretty immoral to buy houses as investments when people who want them as a home are being priced out. I'm afraid I'm rather glad that some of these people are now paying for their greed (not that it helps anyone else...)
