Why are big detached houses in the USA ridiculously cheaper than here in Britain?
I was gobsmacked when I saw absolute massive 5-6 bedroom detached houses for just over £200,000 when i was looking through some US pproperty market websites.

Over here in the UK you can get a 2 bedroom house for the same price.

What the hell?
Hows this?????
Additional Details
the same style house if priced here would be around £1 million!!!!!!!!!

Simple.

We have MORE space.

You have a small island and we have millions of acres of wide open spaces.

Simply put, the less of something there is, in this case land, the more it costs.

Check out prices in New York or Los Angeles and you will see the truth in it.

Basically it' because there is so much more land in the US and so land prices are much lower. Also planning is easier and build costs are lower as well.

Supply and demand...they have a population of about 280million we have a population of about 70 million...its economics

Because houses in the US are made of plywood and cheap timber, we on the other hand use bricks and mortar.

Hence, when then have tornados their whole towns are destroyed, whereas we may have a slipped roof tile.

Because there are tens of thousands more of them available for sale at any given time (10 years, 5 years ago or now) and probobly 60 times the land area to build them than in the UK. Simple economics is correct.

The same could be said if identical houses were here in South Wales and London.

there is more land so it works out cheaper

Supply and demand. You can get a mansion in mexico for 200k pounds....all depends where you are at. But if you go to new york or san francisco you will find small houses for ridiculous prices too. I dont know how anyone can be so foolish to spend so much on a house. Some people argue that wages are better and thats why they pay, but its better to make 50k per year and live in a big nice house than make 120k per year and live in a small dark house because all that extra money is just going to pay the mortgage and you are not really richer, you are just living in a crappier house but you get to "tell everyone" that you make alot of money.

You go to Disney World Florida for 2 weeks and are gob smacked by house prices. I used to be the same regarding house prices in Australia. My youngest sister lives there and we go to visit every 2 years. She lives in Queensland and has this huge 5 bedroom place that cost less than my modest bungalow here. But the build quality is totally different, lightweight timber frame, pressed alloy cladding. the 'Tiled' roof is actually something like what we put on garden sheds but formed to look like tiles etc etc. The land is of course a lot cheaper as we are an over crowded small island, but you are not actually comparing like for like. In both USA and Australia a lot of the homes are built like UK holiday chalets.

IT'S BECAUSE THE MAIN INGREDIENT IS WOOD

Keep in mind that Great Britain is the size of one of the US States (Idaho or Montana, come to mind) and that leaves 49 other states to stuff full of people . Many places have fewer people than they did one hundred years ago. After all we didn't actually pay a lot for the land , just ask any Native American, and the United States Government spent, like fifty years giving away the self same land for free, although, somewhat ironically not back to the Native Americans. The other thing to be considered is that most of the land was covered with the necessary building materials , wood, stone , and mud. That along with access to the most advanced technologically, free market economy and a native predilection to self reliance so that a lot of us learn to perform some or all of the building trades which are as far as residential housing is concerned, largely unlicensed, and not unionized. Some of this should explain it and maybe make you smile!

for many reasons

more land so land is cheaper
The houses are made mainly of wood so they are cheaper to build

these are just a couple of the reasons.

I know what you mean i looked on rightmove and for £18k i could buy a 4 bedroom detached property with land and a wooden veranda, plus a pool!?!?!!??!

I'm moving there and buying 5!

tonyinspain
cause there made of wood like the yanks ha ha

Certain places in the U.S are more likely to be hit by natural disasters, so the houses are made from cheaper materials.

I.e when I went to California in the summer when we went house shopping they were cheaper because it was cheap enough to rebuild after an earthquake etc.
