The Shadow | Why are estate agents such idiots? |
I've only just started looking at getting my first place and i can't believe how hard it is to even see a place. They either dont answer emails, dont call you back or just don't even sound bothered about selling/renting. I travelled over 250 miles to view a place and they never even called to say it has already gone and just left me standing there! Are there any good agents at all? |

Contrary to popular belief, a real estate agent often works with numerous clients at any given time. Due to this, it is not possible for them to be at your beck and call.
Have you pre-qualified for a loan? A real estate agent will be much more helpful when they have more information with which to work. "I am looking for a house that costs near $400,000," gives them a lot more to work with than "I'm looking for a house."
Given the current state of credit markets, many first time buyers who haven't pre-qualifed may not even be worth the time it would take to show them properties.
I've never had bad luck with an agent, so I don't know what else to say. |

I Buy And Sell Houses
|
It's unclear from your question, but it sounds as if you're dealing with the listing agents (the agents representing the sellers/landlords). I still agree with you that the treatment you're describing is lousy (and perplexing).
However, you absolutely need a real estate agent of your own. A buyer's agent (or an agent representing you as a renter). In that case, the agent's fiduciary duty will be to you, not to the seller/owner. And when it comes to negotiating a transaction, you definitely want someone representing your interests. If you use the seller's/owner's agent, that agent's first duty is to the seller/owner, not to you.
If you want, send me an e-mail and I'll be glad to refer you to a good agent in your area. Or just contact and interview 3-5 agents (that's usually the "magic" number) in your area, and select one who seeks the most knowledgeable and professional, and one you feel you can work with.
Hope that helps. |

How many agents have you worked with. If it is only one, find another agent. If you have worked with more than one agent and none return you call, or want to work with you maybe there is a problem on your end. With out knowing details it is hard to guess at what the problem is.
Either way they should have the decency to let you know whats going on. |

To me most are horrid. I have met a few good ones, but most if they can't make money from you, they won't be bothered. Like the foul git that stood you up with no apology.
A good agent will stay in contact, and advise when properties are sold or new ones of interest come along. They are known as "top sellers" usually. |

They are not idiots. Many agents are wonderful to work with. Find one of them and you will not be left outside after driving 250 miles.. |

I recon you are better off if you are selling a home to sell it yourself without paying an idiot 10% of the asking price. |
