Why are houses in the UK so bad?
Why are the majority of houses in the UK so rubbish?

They need to knock down all these 19th century houses and build modern houses. Something that should have been done a long time ago, but i guess nostaligia provails as always.

Not all new properties are bad in quality and build. You get what you pay for at the end of the day, and houses are not ment to last forever anyway.
Everything goes through renewal, and change is inevitable.
Your house wont last forever, so i dont see the fact that it has lasted 100yrs mean much apart from it being older.

Unlike everyone else in here I like new houses. They feel cleaner and mean clean modern nice kitchen and bathrooms without having to lose your life to a renovation project. More than they are better laid out for society today. We recently bought a house and all the older ones we looked at had really small badly shaped bedrooms, pokey kitchens and concreted 'yards.'

But each to their own. My grandparents house is 17th century and my grandpa was born in it and i absolutely love it. If we are talking big, the old ones are classic. If we are talking first-time-buyer-3-bed-semi the new ones can have the edge.

I lived in some 19th/early 20th century houses as a student and they were grim and almost falling down. I promise you nostalgia is not why these are still there! Just money, who could afford to knock their house down and rebuild?

Who do you suggest pays to knock down all the old ones and replace them? It just doesn't add enough value., all about cold cash not nostalgia!

think youve got it the wrong way around. new houses are build so badly these days, they are thrown up with the cheapest materials, they dont insulate them properly, and they are all really small.

Give me an older house any day

its a good thing nostalgia prevails, these "old" houses will still be here long after the modern houses have rotten and fallen down.
Have you noticed all the white salt running down the outside walls of new red brick houses..badly made. Wood is not seasoned anymore ,so it rots in this British climate.
Old houses were made when craftsmen took pride in their work, not like todays builders who throw them up, as many as possible in the smallest space possible, to make a quick buck
Give me an old house anyday
They dont make em like that anymore

I`d rather live in a house with character and rooms I can easily put my furniture in not trying to squeeze a sofa in a box, these new houses being built now won`t last 200 years they are all breeze block and plaster board, I don`t know how the builders can call the houses detached when there is about a foot gap before the next one,

My house was built in the 1700s, still standing!

Here in the States we treasure our old houses and protect them as a part of our heritage. For those of us who look with disdain upon those examples of a bygone era, we have zillions of cracker boxes with paper thin walls, breaking foundations and sagging rooflines, with huge prices to match the dearth of quality.
Nostalgia? Perhaps. But we cherish our old stuff. Just look who's running for President!

UK is a historical country where they are many historical buildings which is rich in history They should be preserve as a national heritage. Even those 19th century houses that are still habitable can still be renovated as they are in fact better constructed. Modern houses should be built on vacant land or area designated for housing development.

There are many new housing developments in the UK. In fact new houses have never been easier to buy, with the recent 'credit crunch' making those developers building new houses to offer great deals.

There is much room to build new houses in the UK, however if you propose we build them on the sites of the older houses, then we would have to relocate a huge number of people which is simply not possible. A lot of older houses are quite attractive too, but you don't have to live there if you don't want. There is so much choice is you look for it, although if you need a mortagage then make sure you can afford it!

LOL!!! you are joking yeah?? ha ha ...modern builds... i wouldn't want one if ya gave it me... i can't see the pieces of crap they build today standing in 100years time can you??? oh and i don't really wanna hear my neighbours everyday or listen to their tv... lol!!!! nah i like my big old solid house that has stood for 160years up to now and is still looking great.. lol!!! ;-)

New houses cost a lot to make and aren't cheap to buy.

Well the Romans managed to build some pretty substantial buildings with built in longevity! Sorry but new houses are rubbish, it doesn't actually seem to matter how much you pay! Older houses (even 60's) have bigger rooms and plots. A good terrace is easily bigger than a new build 2 bed, the back yard is as big as the 'garden'. I have had both, old and new (but not cheap!) in fact the 'cheaper' new build was far superior to this one, which has had to be substantially altered, I look at new builds as 'shells' and only worth buying if the bricky was good! all the show inside is just that! and you can't guarantee that what you buy will end up finished to the showhome standard. It's not nostalgia it's experience.
