Musica | Why are some homeowners so snobby about people who rent ? |
I've gone to various gatherings and heard the people who endlessly brag about their houses, comparing each others houses...and they also tend to talk about those of us who rent though we are 2d class citizens. What's up with that? Additional Details Just so you know I don't begrudge homeowners. It just sometimes bothers me that someone would look their nose down just because I don't own a home although I've been a good, trustworthy renter for over 20 years. I don't own because I choose not to. To me it's like married folks looking down on single people and vice versa. |

My husband and I are renters and we are upstanding citizens! We rent because we move all the time with my husband's job (military). Instead of investing in real estate, we invest in stockmarket/ETF/mutual funds, etc.
I've met alot of snobby home owners who, you will find DO NOT have a retirement plan... or I should say, their retirement plan is THEIR HOUSE! Think about that.... (with today's economy)
We will buy when my husband retires (next 3-5 years) and, in the meantime, we'll still have $$ invested.
Snobby homeowners don't intimidate me! (not that all homeowners are snobs, but you know what I mean) |

Historically speaking, they are 2nd class citizens. Going back into the midieval period, landowners were more important to the government, since their taxes paid for the war efforts of kings and queens.
In modern times, the division is one of wealth. Although some people choose to rent, most renters cannot afford to own a home. The homeowners know this, and it makes them feel better about themselves to hold it over the heads of renters.
Sometimes it's just a point of pride. I recently put new tile into a room in my house, and I was pretty happy with the results. Dang straight I bragged about it a little at the holiday parties. I'm hardly snobby about it, but ownership does put one into a different class of society. |

That is because home ownersship is a status symbol of credit, stability , and wealth .They figure if you don't own you dont have any of that |

Some people have to save for years, owning a home is a major accomplishment. As a homeowner, you have to be careful who you let into your home. Here in Ca, it can take from 30 days to 90 days to get a problem tenant out. During that time, there is no money coming in to pay your mortgage, which will put you into foreclosure and destroy your credit for 10 years. So careful screening is a must when renting out your home. They shouldn't talk about renters as 2nd class citizens I'm sure they were renters once themselves. I am a property manager, we look for 2 years stable work history. The tenant must make 2 1/2 times the monthly rent. No evictions, and we look really close at the applicants credit, (if they aren't paying their bills, they probably won't pay their rent). I hope this helps you see what a homeowner goes through and is looking for. |

Pride.
I own also, but don't laud it over any...I haven't forgotten how it is to be a renter.
On the good side, a renter has no upkeep, there's no lawn to mow, when something needs replacement, it's the landlord's burden. ( I just lost a little over $550 for a water heater, over $7000 for a roof, etc.)
In a security building, you don't need a home alarm. Mine costs nearly $100 every three months.
So the advantages of renting is convenience and financial.
But, there is nothing like having a place of your own. Both have ups and downs, but neither seems to have it above the other. |

Don't worry about it you will be the one laughing at them when the house price falls and they have negative equity!. We have just sold our home to go into rented for the next year or so and then hopefully snap up a bargain! |

I'm not like that! I will be a homeowner until March 15, 2008, after that I am forced back into renting again.
I lost my job in 2004 and never found another job comparable to the last one. I am now making less than half of what I used to make. I ran through all of my savings in 4 years and still no better job. Now that I'm out of money, I can't live off of what I'm being paid. I was forced to sell my home and move. I'm getting about $100 K less than I should have gotten but it was either that or foreclosure.
Losing a job is like being mortally wounded. The devastating, far reaching effects can last for YEARS. I pray everyday that God will have mercy on me and bring this miserable trial to an end. This is the first time EVER in my 42 years that a) I have gone hungry b) had my lights or my gas shut off c) couldn't pay my bills d) had bad credit. My score went from 760 to 500. e) been harassed morning, noon and night by bill collectors calling.
I don't look down my nose at anybody; not even before my existence became the hellish nightmare it is right now. Many things in life we have absolutely NO CONTROL OVER and you never know what tomorrow will bring. ANYBODY could lose their job or their source of income. Owning a home is a blessing that has nothing to do with your business acumen, your intelligence, your skills or job experience. It's a blessing. I know I am going to get another house (this time bigger and better) in the next couple of years after I clean up my credit and get some more income and get out of this horrible bind I'm in. This very humbing experience has made me even more compassionate and understanding of people and their plights. Getting the first house is the hardest because you don't have the back up of a previous sale. I did it as a single mom. It may take a long time but people just have to tell themselves they can do it.
There but for the grace of God go I.................................. |

it's a major investment and not all tenants are saints. i think it will be considered responsible if one homeowner warns others when he encounters a problematic tenant...or situations that others can benefit from. they're also happy and brag if they're able to get a responsible tenant. |
