Why are upper floor apartments more expensive to rent than ground floor?

Additional Details
should have put this in the main post, Im referring to 2-4 story residential apartments in the Cincinnati area

Upper floor apartments typically get more light then lower floors, they might have a nicer view (rather than than shrubs, alleys and trash cans), and they are viewed by renters as safer then ground floors. Cat burglars climb through windows, they don't scale walls. Also, if you're a top floor, you never have to hear people stomping around upstairs:)

better views

aNNiE
the views are PRICELESS!

Because normally when you're higher, you have SOME KIND of view, and you get a lot more wind and fresh air. Plus, everyone likes to be on top!

y not?

The view... less street noise... and it can also be more secure (re break ins) than a ground floor apartment.

because sometimes you might get a view.

NIZZVARK
The view, but it should be the other way around I would think!!!

Because you dont have to hear the stomping of sugar ravaged out of control children.

because they're more private - at least they feel that way

Better view, no one walking by your windows, and no one walking around above your room at 3am.

thefinalresult
The view if it's a highrise. Nobody above you if it's a low rise.

butterflychk500
You don't have to deal with people above you stomping around and being loud, plus some have fireplaces like mine.

Ted E. Bere
Like everyone else says ... the view.

PLUS - less likely to get "broke into" by a burglar.

Yamadog
It's safer.

desperatehw
Views, they are often bigger, they are often more secure, more quiet, and there is more status inherently in "moving on up."

Apparently the view.

Only is some places ; here in Australia there is no difference. But the top floor is best because then you do not hear people walking around above you.

thinkin2much
not really sure except the damage that can be done....or the view, but here its the same price at any floor unless you want covered parking

After the "S" wave of anything more than 8.0 rolls past under
the ground floor most apartments will have structure damage
but when those that pancake because of inferior construction or soil liquidification then upper floor occupants stand best chance to climb out of shattered wreckage alive. Isn't that a worthy sum to pay in-lieu-of risking being crushed to death?

LADY AT THE LAKE
More secure then the ground floor. Less traffic and noise from the street coming into your unit if you have the window open.

gypsy_ck
My personal opinion is the safety of being off the street level. not having to hear people above you, and probably the better view.

RockerChick
They all say the view, but mainly because upper floors have more space, sometimes two levels, and the view of course.

Frogleena
Personally, I like not hearing people walk above me.

Myspace.com?memphisking111
depends on location
and most people prefer them because its lets noisy

amistere4u
Ostensibly they are safer, no ground access to windows. The top floor is also quieter. No one stomping on your ceiling. Might get a view too.

My guesses: better view, less traffic
But if you ask me; it's also harder to escape from if the escalator breaks down.

For starters, maybe the view, but also the fact that if you are down stairs, you will hear the noise upstairs, but they won't hear you down stairs. Also a bit more theft proof.
