Why can't I find land to build a house on that isn't surrounded by trailers in central Alabama?
We built our last home in Odenville, Alabama 4 years ago. Now we want to build again, but everytime we find a piece of land (5 acres or larger), we find trailers all around it. What happened to central Alabama? The only place we see land without trailers for neighbors is Oneonta, (too far out from work to commute) and Talledega, (husband doesn't like the area and it's far out from work, too.)
We've been searching for about 6 months, we've spoken with many agents.
Should we just give up and go with land that has trailers for neighbors? Our contractor is ready to build, we're ready to build.
I wish trailers were illegal. Gross.
Additional Details
Who decided to sell all land within an hour of Odenville as open to trailers while we were living unaware for the last 4 years?

Lol, I had to laugh when I read that, only b/c I've been to Alabama and it IS like that. If you don't want a trailer right next door, you'll have to move into a sub-division with a HOA. Like the first poster said, it is Alabama...

Well, you are in Alabama.

Yeah, trailers are disgusting. Why don't those people all get sub-prime mortgages and buy a real house?
Remember Hurricane Katrina?

i'm sorry do you think that the people who live in trailers are less of a person than you are? or maybe you perceive everyone who lives in trailers as trash! less me quess you are going to tell me that it brings your property value down. well if you take a look around some people who lives in houses i wouldn't live beside them either.i have lived in a house and a mobile home and i prefer a mobile home and you take a good look at some of the mobile home's around in Al they are fixed up very nicely and look just as good as some brick home's or other types of homes to that person. so please don't be so hard on mobile homes something may happen to your home and that's all you have to live in at the time.

I wouldn't move near trailers. Can you find a house already built & give up on the building part. You can change your house but if you have bad neighbors you can't do anything about it.

5 acres? Or do you mean 1/5 of an acre? What do you need
so much land for?

http://www.realtor.com/search/searchresults.aspx?fhcnt=8&loc=Odenville%2c+alabama&usrloc=Odenville%2c+alabama&ml=8&mxp=3000000&typ=20&ofbm=10

Odenville land, 5 acres and more.

build your own subdivision with CC and Rs that
restrict the building of lots to 1-2-3 acres each.

I can help

Your home and land is what you make of it.
If you are too wrapped up in the trailers surrounding your potential homesite, than maybe it's not meant to be.
I would choose a parcel that allows as much space as possible. You can always create a "fortress" by lining your parcel with trees that will mature and eventually block your view of unsightly neighbors.
You could even build a brick wall to the gross if it bothers you that much.
Just a suggestion...have you ever considered that the folks living in the trailers are just happy to have a roof over their head and can't help that it's a trailer? Lucky you that you have the opportunity to build.

Stereotypes are stupid, but the ball's already rolling and I might as well throw this in. You're trashy -- with an attitude like yours, I'm shocked you're not shacking up in a 40 year old, dilapidated single-wide, and making repeat appearances on C.O.P.S

That said, you live in *Alabama*, which is by far, one of this country's poorest states. People are going to live in trailers -- be they the poor, those smart enough to live within their means, or those trying to live cheaply while they build their savings for something better down the line. If you dislike it, pack your stuff and move. The majority of them probably don't smoke, don't drink excessively, or visit the races. As for them being fat and grotesque, unless you and your husbands are swingers hoping to live out some deep seated trailer sex fantasy, I'm not sure why you care.

Your property values aren't your neighbors' responsibility. You should have bought more land, or you should have made sure to move into an area where zoning did not allow for trailers. Also, your property value would have dropped in the last four years, anyway, as the housing bubble popped.

If you're too lazy to commute, don't build. I can't wrap my head around investing time and money to build in a place you're bound to hate.
