You can. Lower your sights and get one in a price range you can afford. You may have to move to Glenrothes.

why can't I afford a house?

kiki_dees
are u a first time buyer?

its because we dont earn enough to get on the propery ladder you have to have the legal fees and a 5% deposit and most houses, even half way decent are at leats £95 000!

its horrible.

Doodie
Not earning enough money would be a major obstacle.

Who told you that you couldn't afford a house? Are you renting now? If you are then more than likely you can afford a home..

When I was 18 - ..a nice wee semi - in a nice area ..was say...somewhere between £60-80K ... with a 5% deposit and shacking up with my Girlfriend ... it was easily affordable..
If I was 18 today ... the same house is worth £250K + - see why you cant afford it now.. house prices are rocketing faster than your Pay rise..

because the housing market has risen far higher than wages.

The government is in the process of overhauling the first time buyer schemes at the moment - it might take some time, but hopefully developers will be forced to provide proper affordable housing (and not just the 50% buy, 50% rent fiasco that is happening at the moment - don't get me started!)

Try registering your interest in affordable housing with your local council, at least then they'll have a record of you and you'll be higher up the waiting list if/when the changes come into place.

Also, have you tried looking for somewhere further out or smaller? I know it's not ideal but if it helps you get on the ladder...

1. Because you are not working
2. Because you are not working hard enough
3. Because you are ten.
4. Because you are looking in too expensive an area. Try somewhere cheap and nasty
5. Because you are looking at properties which are too large, in the right area. Try a broom cupboard
6. You need to resort to a life of crime and general hoodluming to get on the council list

I really do feel sorry for the younger generation. It's a sad fact of life that EVEN graduates and young professionals can no longer get a foot on the property ladder!

Too few houses, too many buyers, too many people owning second or third houses to rent out and make pots of money from mugs like you.

Sorry but sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.
Get yourself an education, become a socialist. At least you'll understand how and why you are being kept down.

KNOWLEDGE equals POWER which equals INFLUENCE which in turn, equals WEALTH.
