Why do people keep telling me that it would be a mistake to become a real estate sales agent?

Additional Details
No such thing as no jobs. Real estate companies are always hiring

It IS a mistake for 80% of the people who try it (or so says the last retention stat I saw).

You work for yourself; rarely are you HIRED by anyone. No one hands you business; you have to find it all yourself. You are in charge of structuring your own days, including scheduling time off, and no one will check your progress or follow up to make sure you’ve completed anything.

Instead of being one person in an office, you are the entire office from the secretary to the CEO and the only person who checks to make sure you’re doing what you’re doing is YOU.

Most agents fail because they cannot function in such a self directed system or they get frustrated when that first paycheck takes 12-18 months to arrive, if it ever does.

its a commission based job, and depending where you live, the market could be down. but pay no mind to those people. Some smart investors are buying real estate now b/c said market is sooo low. Money is made when you buy not when you sell. (and those investors will need agents)

The market will eventually level itself out and go up again, just like it always has. The real question is - can you withstand the ride and stick it out?

There is no such thing as a national real estate market. So don't listen to the people who posted saying there are no jobs. They maybe saying the truth for their respective markets, but not necessarily your market!

Good Luck!

The market is not good for houses right now but its always good to be an agent. If anything, just to have the license.

But don't forget they pay on commission. If you are a talented, honest, hard-working salesman you'll do fine.

Are these other agents? There is always money to be made if you are good, however right now some buyers can't get mortgage money, so even if you find them the perfect house....

Well, right now the real estate market is down. However, that doesn't stop agencies from hiring new relators.

What is definitely more of a threat to the real estate line of work is the internet. The internet gives potential buyers and sellers tons of free information about the market that they previously had to pay an agent to give them. A tech savvy person could buy and sell homes themselves.
However, there are still tons of people out there that either don't know how to do this, don't have the time, or just trust an agent more.

If you're good at what you do, and better than most, you'll succeed.

People are telling you cause realtors are a dime a dozen, just like lawyers. And the market is really bad. There are not too many qualified buyers anymore, which affects both sides of the business...buying and selling. If you're a great realtor, you'll stand out and be successful.

If you need to make money, then this is a bad time to become an agent -- we are in the worst real estate market in years. People are leaving the business daily, many who have been doing it for ten years or more.

If you can wait out this market (estimates are anywhere from six to eighteen months), then it would be worth your while to get in now and learn all you can while business is slow. Once you have amassed a lot of knowledge, hopefully the market will be in an upswing and you can cash in!

Good luck!

I'll give you the simple answer:

80% of the sales (and money) is made by 20% of the agents.
You will have to work weekends.
You will not make enough money to survive when you first start out (you might get lucky but do not start out thinking that way)
That 20% is not going to sit by and let you take food out of their mouth, they will do what it takes to be sure you do not succeed at their expense!

Enough said?
