Doc Johnson. | Why does F.E.M.A. spend an average of $70,000 per travel trailer, when $70 G's would buy a permanent house |
|

that is a good question |

Because they are the government, and the government doesn't know how to do things cheap, easy or efficently. |

You are in error with your question. FEMA doesn't spend its own money they are spending yours and mine lol.
You are so right. Typical government agency. Wasteful, arrogant and dumb. |

Simple, FEMA needs the trailer right now.. not in 4 months. The real question you should be asking is why the #$@! do we have to pay 70k for a travel trailer? |
|

Not sure if this is a serious question, but...
After a natural disaster, you cannot build a house for $70k (not sure if you can before a disaster). Think about Katrina. After the hurricane, there were no roads, no supplies, and no workers. In the first six months following the disaster, I would guess that it would cost triple to quadruple the "normal" cost of the house to rebuild it. THEN, even if the house is built, there is no guarantee there would be sewage, electric, water, etc.
As for why a travel trailer cost $70k, THAT is a different story... I would surmise that the specifications for the travel trailer are rather complicated. Some things I would expect to be part of any FEMA travel trailer would include: approach to waist disposal when no sewage is available, some type of water treatment system, some type of waist management system (trash compactor, etc.), portability (it has to get to where the disaster is quickly and cheaply), reusability for multiple disasters (strong materials that don't break down, ergonomically designed, etc.), and hyper-efficient (chances are there is little to no power resulting in the need for reduced power consumption).
The bigger question to me is, do the FEMA travel trailers meet these specifications? If not, why? I think there were major errors on the part of FEMA in planning and execution. It is not right for the tax payer to have to foot the bill for incompetence. |

B/c our government is currently run by GWB who does everything *** backwards, therefore FEMA is *** backwards. New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina is case in point. |

because it' s the government |

Because any government branch that buys something usually jerks you around so much that you have to inflate the cost, because your costs are inflated, by them jerking you around.
For example:
You or I might want to buy a trailer, we go and look, then choose the one we want, pay, it's over and done.
When the government wants to buy a trailer:
1) they hire experts to spec it out
2) they submit the specs to manufacturers for bids
3) they require performance bonds, and very likely withhold full payment until the warranty is over (usually 20%).
4) then someone, somewhere, gets a "bright" idea and the specs get changed.
5) and you go through the whole bidding process again
6) This BS can go on as many times as folks keep having "bright ideas".
Having bid on government projects I am not joking. I refuse to do government work, it simply is not worth it. |

$70 G's can buy a brand new, up to code, house?? Where??? I agree with you that it is too much for a travel trailer, but when people have been let down and their calls for immediate help in a catastrophic event go unanswered, perhaps the price is not so high after all...... |
