It was first used around 1350-1400 and was, oddly enough, originally spelled "morgage" without the "t." Anyway, mortgage is actually a compound word: "mort" meaning "dead" and "gage" meaning "pledge." It was likely used in that sense to begin with, e.g. you make a "death pledge" or, in other words, you're pledging your life to someone or something. It later came into it's current legal meaning dealing with real estate.
