Why does rent cost so much?
Why is the cheapest place I can find $600 a month?

Depends on where you live and the job situation there. The demand has a lot to do with the price too. If people can get the money for the place of course they are going to charge high prices. Best bet: Shop around, look at all options and then you can bring your cards to the table and maybe bargain for a slight cheaper price. If you do, get everything in writing, so there can be no doubt as to how things are going to be, straight up. And you have the choice of a room mate but that can be a big problem too. Even if it is a good friend or especially family. Everyone needs their space once in a while. And it can be bad.
Best of luck to ya! :~ )

Depends on where you live & how much money you make. For some people its expensive for others its cheap. Economy isnt doing so well right now thats why its so expensive I guess

honestly man.. i asked myself the same question a few years back. why is it that some places rent for a nicer place is $1000 but when you go to a town over you pay $1500.

The truth be told its really based on what state, town you decide to live in. Most places you are probably looking at this point are probably larger corporations, where they have numerous complexes.. with the falling out of the Housing market and people being evicted left and right.. the idea of living in an apartment sounds fantastic. Again truth be told these companies jack the cost of the apartments up to make a nickel during this down times.

your better off buying a house for next to nothing rather then dumping 12k a year into an apartment in which you never own.

You should provide some more information on what par of the country you live. I live in a rather small apartment. 1 living room, 1 bath, 2 bedroom and a kitchen, and all on one floor. It is an apartment and costs $1400 a month. You could try some government housing. I heard it is like 11 dollars a month. Then what ever you have for spare cash you donate for electric and what not......rats might eat you though.

i know! its ridiculous. i used to live in wisconsin and we paid $400 for a place the same size as the place we have now in south carolina, and we pay $700 here! crazy.

Supply and demand. If they can get a lot of money they'll sell it for a lot of money. If they cant sell it the price will come down

In economics class the classic statement is supply and demand = cost.

In political terms, voting conserfative = increased long term costs for short term gain.

So if you have for apples, and you are the only person with apples on a small island the most profitable thing to do usually is to sell the first apple relatively cheap, but to sell each after that at an increased price (and tell people you intend to do this). Why? Because you have created a motive for buying cheap (or early) and thus can place your capital into investments like apple trees, and you avoid waste ~ one rotten apple really can spoil the whole bunch when it comes to selling the rest at a high price.

But, voting conserfative limits your options for use of that capital. So, investers cannot invest in the best most profitable ventures because conserfatives protect vested interests by limiting or eliminating the rights on the non-vested interests. This fundamentally alters the economic apple selling equasion. There is no longer a reason to sell short. There is nothing to invest in worth investing in for the risks / benifit involved.

How could this be so when the rhetoric of conserfatives is so darn "free market"? Well, it's just that, rhetoric. Rhetoric is very cheap both politically and in terms of price for advertisement (Presidential and Congressional elections NATIONALLY were bought for under $2,000,000,000 for the last presidential 4 year term period I understand ~ whilst bennies were handed out to political groupies that raised that $2,000,000,000 by over $1,000,000,000,000 in new Federal Loans alone). You'll note if you've been paying attention that the political pundits got a 500% return on each the political dollar. This amounts to the biggest scam in history, anywhere in any country at any time, EVER. Talk is not only cheap.

So ~ IT PAYS to KILL ABORTED BABIES but TALK ANTI-ABORTION and it pays to SPEAK financial responsibility on the national scene whilst cutting the legs out from under those that might politically oppose you through civil court seizures (especially when done in family or "mental illness court" because these civil courts can prohibit public discourse about what you've done by professionals who might loose their licenses if they talk about "protected clients of the state" ~ the victims of state 'political aggression' are known ...).

But when over half of the population is less conserfative than the holders of power and those conserfatives thus can limit the righs of such " liberal people" said conserfatives thus do not allow the opposition a patent right or business license but rather offer up excuses for taking our civil rights as a means of "protecting the populace from those with a poor sense of financial right and wrong", it is very costly to loose an election.

Like I said, we got Rhetoric, we lost materially and more impotantly a nation we lost the intellectual property rights from over 50% of the population ~ for nearly 30 years now (yes Clinton was a conserfative ~ the consefatives called him a liberal, but it just ain't so ~ he signed the worst of the de@dbeat daddy laws...removing those property rights ~ and enforcing that removal with 100 special "social police" per STATE).

Only NADER could be considered the least bit "old school" Liberal, in this election. And as not enough liberals are running for congress, even if he wins ~ we all loose.

Rent is based on the price of the property and is usually assessed at 1% times the square footage per month and is boosted to account for extra amenities and location. The less safe the location the cheaper it is.
Why not get rid of some of your junk and find a smaller place. There are a lot of studio and efficiencies for under $5oo.
If you haven't used it in 6 months dump it or sell it.

That is a good question.
You can rent a hut in India for 10 Rupees - 5 cents,
a tiny flat in London for 4000 pounds
you can be a squatter for free in Berlin
or lease a closet size room in Manhattan for $3500,
you could get a mud mansion in Rwanda for some HIV,
or soak up bullets in a 80,000 ruble apartment in Moscow.
It's all location, location, location.

The key is the interest rates the banks charge to borrow money. If it cost 0 dollars to borrow money your rent could be dirt cheap.
