Eartha Q
Why don't some people feel a Real Estate agent should be paid?
They work hard for their money...don't they?

Nancy Kay
Most certainly do...and they help you get top dollar for your property or the better deal when buying...but then, I'm an Escrow Officer, so I know what really goes on...

I know I work hard for mine. We're like a doctor, we have to stay on top current trends, market information, sales and listings. Working with buyers to meet their needs involves lenders, homes, title work, closings etc. We know a little bit about alot of things. We're required to keep licenses current with regular classes. It is running our own businesses and people think we don't deserve what we make. Well most don't understand that one commission is often broken down 4 ways, and from our 1/4 we have to pay for all the marketing we use (advertising) office supplies etc., then we have our own taxes and health insurance (have you seen what that costs!) and just personal living expenses. So most are not rich as you might think.

And I've rambled on too much...

I believe they should be paid. However, the thing I think some people have a problem with is the percentage. Does it really take more effort to sell a million dollar home than a half million dollar home? The commission on the million dollar home is twice as much. It would make more sense to be paid on the work that they do and not based on how expensive the property is.

The main reason is that some people are just CHEAP. They may feel like their agent is not doing enough for them. A good agent will work hard for you. They deserve decent wages, and they do not deserve to take less pay for their work unless they are not following the contracted terms. A good Realtor is like any other professional... worth every dollar and then some. My Realtor works very hard for me and I would never dream of asking her to take less pay.

We sure do. Many buyers sometimes think that if they use a realtor they will somehow end up paying more. This is not true. The seller usually pays the broker fee. The assistance a realtor can give a homebuyer is very valuable. Explaining the title policy, appraisals, surveys, home inspection, market analysis to ensure the sales price is a fair price. I bought my first home over 25 years ago and I still remember how helpful and informative our realtor was.

Those people are mostly underpaid. My dad was in real estate for a good 2 years but did he ever get paid? Nope did he work his *** off? Hell yeah he did. He spent hours upon hours of research time on the net looking into properties trying to close deals.. He spent more on the job than he made off of it. The hours and the money spent on training and the time wasted on it it was not worth it not one minute of it.

Because their are good agents and bad agents. I've dealt with both . . . Some agents get jewelery and vacations on top of their commission and some get a big fat complaint to the Florida Real Estate Commission.

I think they should be paid but I also think that the amount can be too much. Houses in my parents neighborhood are selling for $500,000 in about 2 or 3 weeks. The realtors receive 7% (3.5% each). $17,500 for 2 or 3 weeks work seems a little much considering that some houses sell themselves.
