Why has my friend been asked to pay £80 for a credit check to be able to rent a property?
He has been asked to pay a months rent up front and a months rent as a deposit which sounds fair enough. On top of this he has been asked to pay £80 for a credit check. Is this normal or even legal?

They call it an 'Admin fee'

But it's basically full profit. You can check your credit with Experian for £5.99 per month.

Thing is. If he wants the property he's looked at he's going to have to pay it.

It may seem unfair but that's just the way Letting Agents do things.

A private landlord probably wouldn't do this.

I think the agency/landlord is pulling a fast one here, a credit check costs about £4.00 , I wouldn't pay this and would look for another flat.

Yes it's both normal and legal practise in the UK

I never had to pay anything for a credit check, nor was it even mentioned, sounds a bit weird to me.

Ruby's Mom!
i've never heard of being asked to pay for a credit check before, i've had several to get mortgages and credit cards etc etc, never been asked to pay for one bit strange that one, i'd go to the citizens advice and ask on that one, as for a months rent upfront and a months in advance sounds about normal, some places only ask for a months rent in advance which u usually get back when u leave the property...

Find a property to rent privately rather than through a estate agent, things like this are less likely to happen

Yes it is normal and legal. Most lettings agents pass on a charge for the referencing of which the credit check forms a part of.
Sounds a little high to me, but it depends on who's doing it. If they employ a professional referencing agent they will just be passing on the charge from that company.
You should keep in mind that its not the same as the credit check for a store card or loan. And only forms a part of the reference the fee will be for all of the referencing.

It is normal and it is legal to request and have you pay for a credit check. £80 however is a bit expensive. Ask them if they are having a larf! It costs anything from £2.99 upwards but nowhere near £80. Also at the moment you can get a free credit report so why not get your own free copy which will come dated etc and give them that. It has all the info they need and costs no-one a penny.

they're free to credit check him, but he doesn't legally have to pay them for the credit check unless he signed a contract stating that he agrees to do so.
