roger v | Why in the hell would you people pay so much for homes? |
I live in Texas and watch shows about people trying to sell their homes. I just saw the ugliest pos house that was only 1400 square feet sell for 499,000. What the hell could the person be thinking, it is absolutely rediculous. Here in texas for that amount you could own a 5 to 10,000 square foot mansion. Materials to build that piece of crap 1400 square feet were probably around 25,000 (I am in the business) so what the hell gives. I can see why every other new person I meet is from out of state. They can sell their home for 500,000 and come here to buy a mansion and still have a 100,000 dollars left over. I have a 4000 sq ft home and I paid 275,000. My question is why does'nt everybody move to Texas or somewhere where prices of everything arent so high. I mean I guess I understand that where everything costs more the pay is higher, but to be able to afford a 500k house you must have plenty of money. Additional Details I am not venting I am asking a serious question, I am wondering why would you pay that much for a house? I moved farther from work to be in a nice neighborhood, so I am wondering if you put up with the prices? Because you want to be in the area, job, or just crazy. Quit crying about my question, it was a serious question. And you people weather girl or whatever your name is if you bought an expensive house I mean you. |

It is just location.
There are few places worse then Texas. No one wants to live there, therefore housing is cheap.
You may have mansions, but they are still in Texas.
Elsewhere prices are driven up by desirable schools, desirable communities, and access to both jobs and recreation. |

People need a home where they work. Homes downtown (in the city I live in) are in the 7-digits for a one floor flat. |

Because we are nuts and need the home. Everybody couldn't live in Texas it would become too overcrowded. We aren't rich, just in debt up to our ears. |

it is not always a question of "how much" but whether "i like?" =) |

I live in an expensive home. I have worked all my life and I don't think it's a luxury.
People never question the ammount of money they spend on, drugs, drink or cigarettes, each to their own.
I just love having a nice home |

To some people, *where* they live is more important than how much it costs to live there.
I live in an expensive part of the country, and I'm not real happy about housing costs here, but we don't have floods and tornadoes and fire ants and 100-plus degree heat waves, either. So it's all a matter of personal preference.
(And a *lot* of the high housing costs are related to the cost of the land that the house is built on, not the cost of the building materials. Compare the cost of an acre of land in Texas to an acre of land in Connecticut and you'll see what I mean!) |

It's called price discrimination. Thats not a criminal term but an economic one.
I live in New York. The cost of living here is higher than where you are in Texas. The property is more expensive, the jobs pay higher wages, going out to eat is more expensive, etc. Yankees tickets will be about $50 next year, haha.
My rent for my 1200 sq ft apt is probably more than your mortgage and you have a house with a yard etc. But that's what the market price is.
Believe me, you would be the first to complain if a bunch of us New Yorkers started buying up houses in your town. As more people enter your neighborhood the cost of living will go up. The town would have to build new roads, schools, etc. so taxes would go up, restaurants would charge more, etc., your town would get more crowded.
Plus, quite franky, I'd much rather live in New York than Texas. |

Rather an ignorant way to ask this question, don't you think? Did it ever occur to you that people LIKE where they live, like their jobs, like their friends, like their families? And that maybe they wouldn't like it in Texas?
People live where they prefer to live, there are a lot more reasons for choosing a place than house prices. Jobs, climate, cultural amenities, etc etc etc. Housing, like many things, is a matter of supply and demand. Where there is more demand and less supply, prices go up. Where there is less demand, prices go down.
So we could live in Texas, but apparently most people don't want to. |

Texas has heat and ants among other reasons. We are in WA state and are used to weather that doesn't require air conditioning. I hate when it gets over 80 so if in Texas I would want air conditioning and stay indoors all summer. I chat with people in Texas and they keep the flour in the freezer to keep it from having bugs, we don't get bugs in flour here.
My family is here and I have been here 60 years so picking up and moving to a hot buggy place to save a few hundred thousand wouldn't be worth it. We also don't have huricanes, only earthquakes and volcanoes. When you live someplace for 60 years you know where everything is, an hour one way is the ocean, charter fishing, tourist towns. An hour the other is the mountains, skiing, hiking, biking. Two hours one way is Canada and two the other is Oregon. We know the best fishing spots along most rivers and which lakes have which fish. Moving is hard work too and finding a new job that pays as much as I get probably wouldn't happen at 60. |

Personally, I don't care how cheap the houses are... There's not enough money on the planet to get me to move to Texas.
I'd pay twice as much for my dream home because it's in the location and school district I want to be in.
Not everyone wants to live where you live. And not everyone wants to pay what I'm willing to pay. It's all about choices. You make yours and I'll make mine. |

its also the location. what could buy you a 2500 square foot house in rural alabama wouldn't even get you a studio in manhattan. |

I can't believe you think all of US should pack up and move to TX just because the cost of homes is better?? My guess is that you would not enjoy living in TX anymore if that actually happened. I also have a feeling that there are homes in TX that sell for that amount or more. It's a matter job stability, preference and to each their own. Be happy where you are and others can be happy where they are. |

It's the going rate for that location. If you want to live in a nice place it is going to cost more than living somewhere not so nice. It has very little to do with the cost of building materials, and much more to do with land costs and labour costs - live somewher nice and the land costs more, and poeple want to be paid more to cover their costs, and so on. |

Very true Roger. The housing market is a bit crazy right now and Texas is a great option for some folks. Just a small consideration, TAXES in Texas are outrageous compared to the rest of the country. For example, I live in RI. My taxes are $15 on every $1000. Therefore my $250,000 house cost me $1400/mo. + $312/mo. for taxes totaling $1712/mo. My best friend lives in Keller, TX and his $250,000 house cost him $1450/mo. + $500/mo. for taxes (Keller, TX has a tax rate of $24/$1000) totaling $1950/mo. Now I realize that his house is probably newer than mine, but he still spends $200 more per month total. It really just depends on the person. Sometimes you can find the right house with the right taxes. For example, houses in New Shoreham, RI (Block Island) typically cost around $800,000, but they are tax at $8 per $1000 and taxes are only assessed on 50% of the property value! Sweet deal if your can afford the house! |

Location is everything i suppose. Most people will pay more to be in the area that works best for them. I could have moved 30 mins away and bought a much nicer, larger home but being that much closer to my work is worth the extra money less space. |

I agree with you. With the economy the way it is, they're still building these huge houses (probably 5-7,000 sq. ft., or so!) and I can't see why people would even want that (I wouldn't mind an extra room or so), when you consider the expenses to keep it up, including energy bills. It's ridiculous. Even normal bungalows around me are going for $400-500,000 or so. I certainly can't afford a house. |
