As many others have said, it is what the market will bear. In general people in London earn more (London allowance it used to be called) and are charged more - It's not just houses, look at 2nd hand car prices too.
In general capital cities do attract more people who have to pay more for services. Edinburgh is far more expensive to live in than Inverness.
I don't agree that the government should be setting or capping prices though. They would have to do the same with house sales, private sector wages and high street goods. Private companies would then not provide services since the profit would be limited and the government would have to take them over and run them at a loss, thus increasing taxes and limiting spending power even further into a death spiral. |

It's the law of supply and demand. More people want to live down here, fewer want to live up north. It's very crowded down here, and there's acres of space up there. 100 years ago my grandparents got on a train from Driffield, E. Yorks., came to London, married and never returned. They loved London, hated Yorkshire. I visited Driffield 2 years ago to see my ancestors' graves and I could not have had a colder reception, especially in the church. Miserable, racist, ignorant - to think I'm probably related to those snobs makes my blood run cold. My Gran was right - never go back. |

I think Russia tried that approach a few years back with limited success. :-)
But, seriously, it's the law of supply and demand. Obviously, they're going at the higher price. Instead of asking why they are too expensive, you might ask yourself what you can do to get yourself in a position to afford one.
The government isn't your mommy. You have to do things on your own. |
