Why is it that landlords arrange lease dates from Nov to Oct and not Nov to Nov?
This has been explained to me before but I still do not get it. Some landlords put on the lease november to november as a 1 year lease while other but november to october for a 1 year lease. Please explain the difference.
Additional Details
So what if you are in the middle of the month, such as today, and the landlord does not want to prorate, would the last day of my lease still be in october or it goes into the middle of november minus one day?

Because it should be from the beginning of November THROUGH the end of October. If it's Nov to Nov... it's technically more than a year. Some just put Nov to Nov to make it easier I guess.

There are 12 months in a year. If the first month is November, the 12th month would be October. Many people erroneously put November to November for a one year lease. But that would be 13 months.

Greg
The lease starts on the first of November and ends on the 31st of October, exactly one year later. There for it is from November to October.

It is because when you pay rent on the 1st of the month, you are not paying for the previous month, you are paying for the next month to come.

So when you pay the last months rent on october 1st, you are paying through the whole month of October, meaning your lease will end November 1st. This is assuming you signed your lease at the beginning of the first month, but this is why they do that. If your lease was up November 18th or something you would pay a pro-rated amount on November first.

It's pretty simple if you just think of it that you are paying ahead 1 month every month...

Because it's one full year!
A year runs January 1 to December 31.
. . . .or from Nov.15 to Oactober 30. . .short 15 days, but LL wants to start rentals on First.

Technically, 12 months lease is from November 1, 200? to 31 October 200?.
If you put have a lease from Nov 1st to Nov 30th of the following year that is 13 months.
Hope it helps

It is confusing unless you look at the entire date - 11/1/08 - 10/31/09 You ARE getting an entire year. If it went to 11/1/09 you would be getting a year and a day.

If the lease starts Nov 15 with no prorated rent then the lease will end Nov 15. But this is NOT a good idea because it gets really confusing.

From Novermber 1 2008 to Oct 31 2009 is exactly 12 months. If it went to Nov 1, 2009 that would be 1 year and one day.

Jan 1 to Dec 31 is a year, Not Jan 1 2009 through Jan 1 2010

nov 1 to oct 31 is one year,;;;; nov 1 to nov 1 is one year and a day.

I guess it depends on your point of view.

One full year is really Nov 1 to Oct 31st. November to October.

Or perhaps some look at it as start in November end as November is about to begin next year. November to November.

I would vote for November to October as a more accurate description.

From the 1st of November of one year to the 31st of October the next year IS exactly one year. The month, and consequently the twelve-month length of the term of the lease, changes at midnight between Oct 31st and 1st Nov. If the term ran from 1st Nov to 1st Nov that would make it 1 year plus 1 day. So, I suppose it could be argued that either is correct - from the beginning of November, however that is described, to the beginning of the next November.
Mind you I don't know why October/November was chosen in the first place.

Othniel
The year would be Nov. 1, 2008 to October 31, 2009. Since rent is due on the first day of the month and covers that month your rent paid October 1, 2009 completes the rental year. If it went to November then you would be in the property for 13 months.

Count them. November to November is thirteen months. Unless they just call it November to November, with the second November being non-inclusive and you have a penalty to pay if you are really still there the second November.
