Brenda | Why is there public housing? Is it really for the needy? |
I'm just wondering if it's really to help those who are needy. OR if it's really just another way for cities to make money. I mean, real estate is a big business and why wouldn't a city jump into the business of owning properties and renting it out. Is ask because I have lived in public housing for 17 years and during the majority of that time, I have felt like they really don't care about me, my family, my neighbors, or even there own property.. I wonder if it's like that everywhere...... Additional Details You're right Max.... Only the strong survive. And what's really sad... is that while the weak are tying to hold on, they get kicked around and treated like they're nothing but crap. |

Yes you are 100 % right My husband is A Supervisor @ a apartment complex ,where ther is Public Houseing , or also called HUD Housing. No they do not care. My Husband was told never give them new stuff , and just keep the codes up and that is it. You will never get anything nice or new , and they wont help you out with anything if it breaks. Even though they say they do they don't. Also The only reason they have this is because yes it's A Tax Right off for them , and also low property Tax. Plus they get A huge right Off. You will see some Company's have it for like 10 years , and it will look like **** all over the place , and then you will see them do all kinds of work to the place because they no longer have HUD Houseing , and now they bring there rent up. Now what dose that say. THEY DON'T CARE. And I don't live in one, i live in a Beautiful New home , and there Is no need for me to lie , so take it from the peson who Has been in the Office and seen it.
By the way you need to complane about your situation , and if they don't do anything tell them you will call the NEWS AND TELL THEM ABOUT THE WAY THEY TREAT YOU...... |

I work at a community center that services the needy, and I can't tell you that without public housing a lot of these people, many of them disabled and elderly as well as children, would be out on the streets. |

public housing is for the poor and it's not a scam. the city does own the public housing sector, already. and, they do not care about you. you are just a number in a gov't system. |

yer it is. half priced housing for those who are actually needy. rent prices suck, and they would be better off just having properties to rent instead of for public housing. |

Most public housing rents are below what the market rental price would be so yes public housing is aimed at supporting people in need. |

Yes, public housing id needed. I live in public housing. My husband divorced me amd left me and my son on the streets. We had no money, no vehicle and no where to go. He pays us $300 a month in child suppoort and I have applied for every job opening there is and still don't have a job because I have ben a housewife my entire life. I would like to go back to school but can't afford it. I would like nothing more than to have a job and ahome of our own so we could get out of here, But If it were not for housing, My son and I would be homeless. This is the first time in his short 15 year life he has not had Christmas, not even a tree, but we were thankful that we were warm and had food to eat. Thank God there is such a thing as public housing! |

Well I do not know where you are from, but the places I have lived around the states can be very costly as far as housing goes, rent being in the thousands of dollars. I have never stayed in public housing but my sister did and she was paying about $500 for a townhouse that would have cost over $1000 if she was not in public housing, that was in Florida. I think it is really to help the poor because a lot of people would be homeless if it did not exist. I do not know about the maint. issues. |

Not really. I have worked in public housing and it sometimes seems the other way around so I guess it is from the person's view point. I have seen tenants that will almost destroy a home in just a few weeks and don't feel they should be responsible for the damage, move out on short or no notice and then want to know why they don't get security deposits back. These types of tenants take advantage of a good thing and they skew everyone's vision of what is really good. |

here in my town we have 2 seperate low income housing units. and they are rent based on income and there is a long waiting list to get in. I personally know several people that make decent incomes living in them. If they are meant to be used by the people making minimum wage. We don't have what you call high rents here as we are pretty rural so it's not like people like me that make more than min. wage can't afford a place to live. I feel lucky that i am buying my property and if i ever decide i have an extra trailer that i can rent and i only rent it for 350 a month with utilities included.for a one bedroom. |

I don't think the cities are making any money on these projects. Most people in public housing pay a way lower rent then they if they lived in other housing. I know I lived in it for about 4 years
I was in Eugene Or. and they took very good care of the housing and property there. |

Public housing is an alternative to people being homeless. I have rarely seen people that live in public housing where the majority of the tenants were disabled.
I don't see where the "tenants" think they have a right to live in luxurious accomodations. If you want to live in a better place, then they need to get up off their butts like the rest of America and go to work every day.
Then again, that is hard when alot of them have criminal records and felony convictions, and some single other has 5 kids by 5 fathers and wants to sit at home eating bon bons all day rather than get up and work.
I also don't see people in public housing taking care of the property either...they are their own worst victims.
The "projects" again, is an alternative to homelessness.
If you don't like it, there are colleges everywhere (there is NO EXCUSE to not go to college, as everyone qualifies for loans, at minimum), with money available, and if you are too lazy to go, then I don't feel sorry for you if you end up sleeping on the park bench. |
