PS
Why isn't anyone talking about the real reason for the home mortgage defaults?
Everyone with common sense knows that the reason for so many bad loans being granted in the first place was that banks were forced by the government to give proportional loans to all people, including minorities or risk being fined and even imprisoned. The result is that banks went over-board , paranoid about being sued by class action lawyers and minorities. A flood of bad loans, and the hens are coming home to roost a few years later. Not surprising that it happened. Now our economy is going to tank to appease the lawyers and to put undeserving people in expensive homes.
Additional Details
Jen,
I am not saying that only minorities are defaulting. But as you know, when the vultures (layers) and regulators (Gov't) are watching every move banks make like a hawk, the banks will overcompensate and issue loans to MANY people who don't deserve one, whether they are minority or not. For example, suppose you would get fined if you didn't shovel the snow off of at least 80% of your sidewalk. You would not stop at 80%, you would shovel the whole thing and even expose some grass, just to make sure.

You are being misled as to what has caused the housing market collapse by the mainstream media. They aren't very good at explaining things so the AVERAGE person can understand it. The problem is much deeper than it looks on the surface. Much too complicated to get into much detail here. Examples of contributors: Gas prices increased budgets by 40% over the last 2 years. House values over inflated for 3 of the last 5 years (sometimes as much as 69% in a single year). Borrowers getting into loans they didn't understand. The subprime lenders in this country AND abroad did hand out loans like candy, but WE bought them!! Most people don't even understand that they are BUYING a loan. At a rate. Then after they got the loan that they didn't understand, they were sold a refinance on the house. Their friends bought a car they bought a bigger nicer one. Boats, jet skis, trips to Europe! Go ahead you have equity. No body explained to them that equity is an imaginary number just like the stock market it goes up AND IT GOES DOWN!!!!! I could go on and on.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and in your case, very dangerous, because you have very little.

I_Hate_Stupidity
If the people who couldn't afford to buy a home didn't BEG for a loan to begin with, I think THAT would have stopped this problem.
Whatever happened to personal responsibility these days?

I'm not sure where you get your information at, but when I was underwriting loans, we barely had time to remember the borrower's name much less look at what race they were or where they lived.

Most underwriting is automated now for the most part.

I can tell you what the REAL problem is...giving someone an ARM rate that barely qualifies in the 1st year with an income that is NOT likely to increase ie. teachers, cashiers, police officers, etc.

THOSE were the loans that I was forced to "make work" and I knew that once the rate adjusted, these people were not going to be able to pay...and NEVER did it have anything to do with race.

Claudio
What you said make no sense. You don't know what you are talking about.

Jen
That's not it. The subprime lenders are usually NOT banks. I've worked at three different ones and am a seasoned banker and the big banking institutions are actually extremely strict about who they lend money too. My current employer will not lend you money if your credit score is below 640. They won't even think about it, regardless of what "minority" you are. If you really think it's a minority issue, then you're mistaken..and possibly racist.

CPA/PFS
Wrong premise. Wrong conclusion. Wrong generalizations. Wrong bigoted view.

Brian A
So, it is only minorities that got in over their heads? Please, get real.

Interesting theory, but not all correct. Banks were greedy and let anyone have a loan. Not just poor people, but middle class people who also couldn't afford the loans. You are a little off the mark but nearly there. It wasn't about minorities and I am getting sick of hearing about it like that. STOP! You know, being a woman is a minority too. The minorities out number white people so we need to think about calling them that and they get more breaks from the government than a caucasion so lets really get real here OK?
