It's a great investment. If you rent, you don't gain equity.

Unlike renting, you are paying for something that's yours. You can paint the walls or do what you like. Plus you get a return when you decide to move.

For building wealth, security, stability, shelter...need any more reasons?

The basic answer is, because it's an asset that you control and can sell, maybe for a profit later on, and you have a one-time exclusion of taxes (up to a maximum) on the profit.

Like any major asset, it requires maintenance, so you either spend money on keeping it up or it decreases in value, making it pointless to have bought it if you can't afford the upkeep.

And if you buy a house in a upmarket and the market turns, as seems to be happening now in many places, you may find you can't sell it at a profit without waiting for the market to turn around.

And then there are real estate taxes that have to be paid, and will be set by how much the house is worth, not by how much you earn.

A home is important because the price always goes up depending upon the location.I bought my house in 2001 for $169,000. Today because of the businesses around the area it is worth $275,000.00 and we can refinance and take out equity

It isnt always a great investment, but usually it is. I dont know if you are a renter now, and if you plan to buy a condo or a house, but owning a house is cool because you dont hear the idiot neighbors upstairs ranting and raving at 2AM in the morning, you dont hear the newlyweds fighting across the hall, your car has a garage to stay covered up in the winter, and it wont get as many dents because its not in the parking lot anymore.
Aside from that, yes there are financial benefits.

It's a lot better investment in the long run than putting money in the bank. Better than a savings account!

In Thailand we say that house is one of the four important factor in our life. First is foods, then clothes, medicines and house.
