Why would a landlord need to check exactly where your money comes from?
See I wanna move out and I was told in order to sign the lease, they must know exactly where you get your money from. Is this right? And if so, then how can I sign the lease without a job?
Additional Details
i should have added that my friend i am moving in with is paying first month rent. then after that we both are gonna get into construction jobs.

They need to identify your income comes from a reliable steady source and to make sure they aren't an accomplice for money laundering. Most of the time you can't get an apartment without a job unless your are regularly receiving money from another source like welfare, social security or maybe in your case ... a trust fund. If your parents are gifting you your rent, just have them cosign the lease!

Put yourself in their shoes. Would you trust someone you didn't know to promise to pay you money each month who didn't have an apparent way to come up with it?

This is exactly why students have such a hard time renting...we have to have our parents co-sign for us because we don't have stable income of course even though many times the loans we take out to pay for school do help with housing costs. They do it to check for steady income that way they know rent will be paid. It is something the majority do now days.

Cloudcity CC
Well, I'm guessing they are trying to see that you have a steady income so that in a few months time they are not having to try and remove you from the building...

other than that, I cannot imagine what interest it would be to him or her.

the need a letter of employment and a recent bank statement proving funds, if u have no bank & no job how can they expect you to pay your rent?
theres no verification valdating that you can. it would be stupid on their part to approve your lease with no income or assets.

Well, normally a landlord likes to have a pretty good idea that someone is going to pay their rent. Having a job is a good start.

If you don't have a job, he might be kind of doubtful about getting his rent.

Fact of Life: You need a job....J-O-B....to make it when you move out of mommy and daddy's house.

Personally, I would have to say my assets were none of their business, now a verification of employment I can understand. Sounds like they are looking to make sure you have steady employment and the ability to pay your rent, nothing wrong with that.

Can I ask you something, how do you expect to pay your lease if you don't have a job? Everyone else seems to have to work to rent, why not you?

if you don't have a job, how can you afford the apt? they want to make sure you are legally employed and will be paying rent on time

They want to make sure you have a job or verifiable source of income to ensure that you can make the monthly rent payments. If you have no job, they may ask for a co-signer.

curious gal
That's probably the reason why they want to know where you're getting your money... since you don't have a job. It's a liability for the landlord to take you on without knowing whether you're able to pay the rent.

You don't currently work? Then you have no business renting. They need your employment information and will do a credit check and criminal background check. You may need more than the first months rent, most want two months deposit - first & lasts months rent. Plus deposit. I would stongly urge you to seek employment first, then a place to rent.

I_Hate_Stupidity
They have every right to know that you're able to pay your bills because they want their money. They'd be morons to let someone move in that refuses to tell them how they plan to pay rent....cuz that pretty much means they CAN'T anad are just looking to mooch.
If mommy and daddy still pay your bills, just tell them that.
