Why would a potential landlord need to know my checking account number?
I think it's kind of odd...he's asking for it on the application.
Additional Details
It appears to be for credit checking purposes. I don't have a problem telling him my bank. But my account numbers?

Chaosman
A potential landlord? Don't give it to him, he can use your name and SIN (SSN for states) to get your credit info. Your checks have your account number on them, so when he IS your landlord he will have your account number at that time.

SCCRealEstateUNCENSORED.com
Everyone here has told you that it is not necesarry BUT I will tell that there must be a reason. Years ago I hired a professional property management company to find me some renters and on their application they asked for the acct #. So there is a reason why this is asked.

After that one time I used them I decided to spend a little more of my time if I needed to find a tenant and so I have and with that my application only asks for the bank's name not the acct # because I know most people like you are reluctant to give such important information as acct #. To tell you the truth, if I was in your possition I WOULD be suspicious and reluctant as well!!

No reason...and this from a landlord. There is a reason to check your credit...but checking...not really a reason for that. I check credit sometimes, employment and past landlord if local. I never ask for acct number.

ladyangelovely
I wouldn't give that info out, it could be used to access your account. If he wants to do a credit check/background check he can do so using your name and date of birth. If he insists on having your account number, I'd contact the local housing authorities and see what they advise.

They might be asking for credit checking purposes or for automatic withdrawal of your rent. I'd ask if it's necessary and if so, I'd move on to another rental.

satarnag
Don't give it to him, there is no reason why he would want it.

Regards

nece4ever29
Do not give it to him that is personal information that he has no business knowing. If he insist tell him no deal on the rental.

kalalilly
Check the fine print in your lease agreement. By signing, you may be giving him the right to draft the rent from your checking account. He might need a SS# to check credit but not bank info. Be careful

If a landlord wanted to check your credit they can do so with out your checking account number. I would certainly ask why they would need your checking account number also, but nevertheless DO NOT give your checking account number out.

He's a potential thief. Don't give it out. In fact, report him.
